Not just Brexit and controls already commented on by others, also difference in gauge, would need UK specific rolling stock. Also track access charges through channel tunnel.

I cycled over it tonight. I noticed the chippings on the surfacing coming loose but not uneven, looks like it needs more binder on the surface. Contractor will still be under snagging period

My experience, frequently. Conversation with local authority highway engineer about access to station, he said it's 'very safe and no concerns'. But footpath is 400mm wide?. He was talking about vehicle access, he hadn't considered pedestrian

Agreed should be 'supporting modal shift'...
And next stage should be active travel routes along fife coast to to crail, pittenween and st Andrews

Same on 'who's making the argument about immigration' ignoring a number of parties and governments in devolved countries that do make the argument for it
comment in response to

Going to pull you guys on being a bit London centric when talking about whos pro immigration. You didn't mention Scottish and Welsh govs that have pro immigration policies and have asked for direct immigration devolved powers.

That would need is to get around treasury brain that sees all public spend as bad...
comment in response to

You mentioned projects are judged based on time savings. That's because that's what treasury/DfT measure transport outcomes which is based originally on car journey savings. completely erroneous. Why HS2 is associated with time savings again erroneously.

Borders rail failed massively under treasury rule book CBA<1. It was promoted by Scottish gov based of connecting Borders economy to Edinburgh and addressing social deprivation, it's worked...

I am holding out for sleeper trains from Scotland to continent!! 😉

Same here. And I look forward to it in my lifetime..🤔🫣

The best comment was " went on holiday to Germany and Holland and normal people riding bikes not lycra louts like in UK"... Spectacularly missing the point why ' normal people' don't cycle in UK.

I thought the switch in how funding is allocated might stall a few projects. At least there is appetite to move the project on, how long delivery takes is a real problem
comment in response to

It is, the check in was built and sized for cross EU passport checks, not full on check with stamps, another Brexit dividend.. so it's a capacity issue. Are plans to deal with it but needs major changes to station..

Cycled home past it other day and busy with primary school like in climbing frames and teenage lads playing basketball. It's excellent infrastructure. Hats off to all involved who made it happen
comment in response to

Yeah that's exactly what I thought, social media radicalisation and you will have bad faith actors from Europe coming and telling they are right to be worried at like minded conferences... Not looking at Liz Truss etc
comment in response to
post
I agree with that. I also think part of the issue is people think consultations are referendums and they are not, so it ends up worse than not doing them in first place
comment in response to
post
But I am a community councillor as well so do things from other side as a consultee and many of my retired colleagues can be too aggressive for my liking and I don't get it. You work with people to get things done.

It may be that as a demographic they are used to being listened to and having power. Younger generations have little. I was at Iraq protests as well and it was more on hope than expectation it would change anything.
comment in response to
post
I have thought long about why this is. Perhaps it's because they were told they worked hard would get a nice retirement and many have been retired for a long time and expect to be left alone. You point about their attitude to government could also contribute
comment in response to
post
Non scientific this but as a general trend I find younger people with families etc are attending because they are scared of what the scheme is, talk through it and they are generally okay then.
Tends to be the retired I get it in the neck from and more of them fit nimby stereotype.
comment in response to

Engineer here I do a lot of public engagement events on projects over many years and demographic at them are almost all boomers/ retired with some younger people or special interests in attendance.

Lot of the network is still slow but can see the money going in to upgrades and investment. I was really impressed as well

Lots of countries you wouldn't think do, Kazakhstan has Spanish talgos, Thailand's building its first route, Indonesia's just finished their first section.

Exactly.. Minutes not months..
It's useful as a data scraper but interpretation and understanding at the moment.. nope

When I said that's wrong and listed examples it hung for 3 months and then said you are right... No idea if it updates the algorithm

Tried something similar recently, What's the second underwater tunnel in world, correctly said Thames tunnel was first, said second was road tunnel in states in 20s. Missing out Severn tunnel, mersey tunnel etc etc

How does their ability to deliver feed into wider governments policy/ structures. More detail on this . Eg are plans/ funding stable, how is delivery measured, how are delivery teams incentivised to perform. Do they have skills issues?
comment in response to

Yeah they have. It was used in Herefordshire and yeah I used to use it.

It's pretty obvious it's a premeditated shoeing of zelinsky. The point she should be making is it is pretty unusual not to upset trump if u r a democratically elected leader. The fact we praise starmer and macron surviving a encounter says it all.

Thought opportunity from balerno to track railway to curriehill station and then baberton with lit 4m wide corridor linking back into Currie and juniper green
comment in response to
post
Exactly right. I had noticed this when I cycle along Lanark rd in from balerno. Gridlock to Gillespie junction and at slateford. Rush HR and school run is terrible. Need to reduce school driving. Plenty of opportunity for active travel as well

I think the way he is behaving there will be enough people to protest Balmoral. Hopefully Janey godleys spirit lives on.

Better to store the energy in pump storage schemes or batteries. Far more efficient than converting to hydrogen..

When I read your first post I read it as "please return to the centre" in political sense, which is just as apt. Agree, working practise have changed what do we do to adapt cities rather than try and turn back clock
comment in response to
post
I have been away from the tourist centre and been there at rush hour and I still don't know why it's any worse than any major city. It's a much better city for pedestrians and cyclists than 90% of the cities I have visited wordwide

Been to Amsterdam lots of times and walked it every time, it's a fine city to walk around not sure what you mean

No easy answers for this. Green party plan for tunnel from Leith to kinghorn on first look was WTF. But the idea of relieving pressure on Haymarket corridor and tying Leith onto network is good.

There's a case for speeding journeys between Edinburgh and Perth with via stirling or ladybank being very unsatisfactory. TS priced business plan level 15 years ago at £800 mill for new line..

Agreed. I thought the buses and trains would be grinding to a halt but still operating to balerno and West Lothian even tho snow was deepest I have seen in ages. Well done.
