The lurch towards extremism reflects society. Over the years, education and intellectual pursuit just for the sake of learning has been diminished, extinguished. What's left: desire for pleasure. History has shown that bad actors fill that need, eg Haitians eating pets.

Difference then and now: age of debate and reason has faded away. Replaced by sound bites of cruelty that appeal to the base instincts of certainly 77m. To fight facism requires not debate but to get into the dirt with them unfortunately.

Superb commentary. The dangers of politicians being bought as commodities, are now on display in the US. We have a choice in Australia to go down that path or reject the duopoly dominating policy by supporting independent candidates
