Yes puts you in situations you’re not comfortable with. Yes helps you get out there.

Suddenly with my new philosophy I was saying yes to anything I was asked to do. I found myself volunteering for charity functions, going to the play with six people in the audience, and saying yes to any event, literally any event, anybody asked me to attend.

What was it? Say Yes. I know it’s not revolutionary but it changed my behaviour so much.

Suddenly I had no friends, no family, and no social structure around me. It took me time to invent a two-word philosophy to kick myself out of the gloom and doom.

With years of Untouchable Days under my belt, do I still go through the exercise of scheduling one Untouchable Day every single week? The honest answer is no. Now I schedule two.

But, what about emergencies, you might be wondering? The short answer is that there really never are any. I tell my wife where I am, and since I have no meetings scheduled, no one else expects to be able to reach me.

On Untouchable Days, I picture myself sitting in a bulletproof car surrounded by two-inches of thick impenetrable plastic on all sides. Nothing gets in. Nothing gets out. My cell phone is in Airplane Mode. My laptop Wi-Fi is disabled. Not a single thing can bother me… and not a single thing does.

How do I carve out Untouchable Days? I look at my calendar sixteen weeks ahead of time, and for each week, I block out an entire day as UNTOUCHABLE. In all-caps to let it just scream out at me. The day can move within the week, but cannot jump weeks and cannot be deleted.

Untouchable Days are days when I am literally 100% unreachable in any way…by anyone. On these days, I’m 10 times more productive.

I finally found a solution that I feel has saved my career, my time, and my sanity. If you’re with me right now, I bet you need this solution too: I call it “Untouchable Days.”

I’m no longer that guy. Now when I’m done with work, I soak in time with my wife and children. So I realized that what I needed was a practical way to get more work done *without* taking more time.

But prioritizing one Family Day a week creates energy, helps you be choosy about what activities you’re signing up for, and helps avoid saying a passive yes to every invitation.

Is this tough to do? Of course! Think about how many days you have with a sports practice or somebody’s big birthday. Those are beautiful things.

We had so many weekends blurring by in a smear of gymnastics, birthday parties, and extended family dinners. Fun weekends! But no deep family time.

A full day with no cellphones, no extended family, no friends, nothing. Just me, my wife, our little kids and zero interruptions all day.
