We don't have to keep regurgitating that games and TTRPGs by extension are "arbitrary," loves. It feels we, i.e. the game design philosophy crowd, are stuck on this foundational component of art as a whole in a way that serves us minimally in discussion. If that's so important why create at all?

I don't find it is useful at all to consider portions of your art "optional" even though it is true someone could completely disregard it. What do you or the audience gain from that? What if before a concert the band said "feel free to ignore the drums if you don't like them" and meant it? #TTRPGs
