E-fields doing their thing. Just sayin’..

Love stumbling across gems. Noise, is not just noise, lets stratify this notion more often:

What is a causal process?

2.5 years after ‘the great debate’ at ASSC Amsterdam, we revisit it: Lamme, @standehaene.bsky.social , @smfleming.bsky.social , Boly and @anilseth.bsky.social present their theories, and Melloni and myself try to extract some insights and criticisms. >>> www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

If you blinked this week, you could have missed two papers on mind blanking! A review: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... And an empirical paper: www.nature.com/articles/s41... Congrats @ademertzi.bsky.social and @parboulakis.bsky.social!

🏆 Embracing #Complexity: Principled and Practical Approaches to #Emergence 🏆 We are delighted to announce a first-of-its-kind workshop on emergence across scientific domains. Hosted on 23-27 June, 2025, @ #IFISC, Mallorca, Spain AND, WE WANT YOU TO COME! 🫵 🪧 ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS OPEN 🪧 Link 👇

Hearing @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu speak on EU’s AI future at the #AISummit in Paris sounds promising. But I would argue that a parallel with @cern.bsky.social should not be the direction. We should not be investing in larger data centres but rather better systems that use significantly less compute.

How is this a *shocking* surprise?

Ouff!! This sounds fascinating. May I ask, does this relate to at all, a form of coarse-graining as a mechanism for uncertainty reduction?

Is there anything written about the compatibility/differences between the constructor theory (a la David Deutsch) and Wolfram's computational universe program?

Can a "theory of everything" explain complexity from atoms and molecules to societies? The answer is negative, and even within physics, emergent, irreducible phenomena exist. Check this @pnas.org paper by @sfiscience.bsky.social co-founder David Pines and RB Laughlin pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1...

Sounds like an amazing post.

Is it crazy that I think category theory should be taught in primary school?

An incredible tool, put together by maybe the most epic code-whiz I know. Laouen (Belloli) and co. have really outdone themselves with this one. If you’re specifically interested in applying synergy-based measures of HO aspects, I’d propose a careful read.

Cutting it a bit fine, but here’s my review of the year in neuroscience for 2024 The eighth of these, would you believe? We’ve got dark neurons, tiny monkeys, the most complete brain wiring diagram ever constructed, and much more… Published on The Spike Enjoy! medium.com/the-spike/20...

Interesting ideas here. To add, I am also wondering about complexity that doesn’t bring into play the notion of nonlinearity(?). I think nonlinearities are but one aspect contributing (sometimes) to emergent complexity..

I will try to post the new articles published in Neuroscience of Consciousness here! Let's start with a paper on grief, which challenges neuroscience's ability to investigate affective states. **The nature of grief: implications for the neurobiology of emotion** academic.oup.com/nc/article/2...

💤 As I approach the end of my PostDoc at IMT Lucca, I’m looking for a new job! 🧠 Ideally: Research roles related to sleep/dream/consciousness/cognitive science. 🤖 Open to scientific writing & data analysis, too. 📍 Milan, nearby areas, or Switzerland. DMs open 💃🏼

This is a good thread explaining the flipside. But the main cause for concern is not in equating real neurons with ANN neurons, but in equating the whole structures which these neurons, respectively, are constituent parts: the biological brain, and an ANN. It is the *then* statement, not the *if*.

Tim Bayne's always-witty writing is hard to pull away from. A brilliant, and for some reason, heartfelt--to me anyway--exposition of #Dennett and his work:

What are the prospects for AI that is, or irresistibly appears to be, conscious? Here’s a substantially revised version of my paper “Conscious artificial intelligence and biological naturalism” - many thanks to many folks for super-helpful comments osf.io/preprints/ps...

The call for the very special 10th Mediterranean School of Complex Networks is out! @mscxnetworks.bsky.social This year, it will take place in Ortigia, a beautiful small island in Syracuse, Italy. The lineup of lecturers is outstanding! All info in the website: mediterraneanschoolcomplex.net
