I needed to write about something that’s giving me hope, so I wrote about Independent Bookstore Day which is this Saturday. lithub.com/something-go...

sames.

Removing a black 4-star general at Secretary of Defense and replacing him with a white talk-show is the perfect example why DEI is essential. It's not about hiring unqualified minorities, it’s about foiling the majority's habit of hooking up under qualified mediocrities of their own caste.

My hometown had (rip) this deli that used to run kids’ trains on the ceiling and served a grilled pound cake sundae. They grilled it in butter and covered it in sauce and whipped cream. It was decadent and quite possibly illegal.

Always a treat from Aimee Nezhukumatathil #insects #migrations www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/o...

It is this way with wonder: it takes a bit of patience, and it takes putting yourself in the right place at the right time. It requires that we be curious enough to forgo our small distractions in order to find the world. Aimee Nezhukumatathil

Elon Musk’s staffers are trying to push into the National Gallery of Art. They recently met with the museum’s director and legal team, to question its legal status and explore ways to assert influence. One of the nation’s most respected art institutions is now in their crosshairs.

First fireflies of the year here in Austin!

We are excited to announce that this year's judge for our Summer Creative Nonfiction Contest (opening May 15) is @nezhukumatathil.bsky.social, author of Bite By Bite and World of Wonders, a New York Times Bestseller and Barnes and Noble Book of the Year. For contest guidelines, visit bit.ly/cnf25

“The Painted Lady’s migration, chronicled in the photographer Lucas Foglia’s new book, “Constant Bloom,” is a powerful reminder of our interconnections with nature and our shared stake in an ever-changing world.” @nezhukumatathil.bsky.social

I had no idea butterflies could travel that far. This is amazing.

What a miracle to read something beautiful in the newspaper these days

I really appreciated @hankgreen.bsky.social’s dire wolf video, which is really worth watching. He breaks down the science, the hype, and why it’s important to tell the truth about extinction: youtu.be/Ar0zgedLyTw?...

"A flock of Painted Ladies rode the wind over the Atlantic Ocean from W. Africa to the northern coast of S. America -the 1st documented insect journey across an ocean." Beautiful essay on Painted Lady butterflies by @nezhukumatathil.bsky.social w/ photographs by Lucas Foglia. #insects #naturewriting

There is a lesson we can learn from the 9,000-mile migration of the Painted Lady butterflies, @nezhukumatathil.bsky.social writes: “Even if our wings become frayed and raggedy after a long and difficult journey, it’s not too late to find new ways to persist.”

!!! …bright story from the butterfly world: #gift

When the news is bleak & you get called upon by the Climate desk at the NYT to bring one of the 'happy' science news stories to life, you don't say no. 🦋😉 Am proud to share my 2nd nature Op-Ed for the New York Times, after months of prep and research for this bright story from the butterfly world:

A bit of positive news on this ridiculous timeline.

NIGHT OWL, Ecco 2026. Nature poems like you’ve never seen before 🦉 So excited for you to see what kinds of poems I’ve been cooking up the past seven years. Coming from the incredible team led by the incomparable Sarah Murphy at @eccobooks.bsky.social Spring 2026.

This, but with a narwhal. Except not jumping into my kayak or I’d be smooshed.

Fun fact: the term "Gilded Age" was coined by Mark Twain to satirize the promised "golden age" after the Civil War. Instead what we got was lots of social problems and corruption. So, not a golden age but a thin gold gilding covering up all the rot.

I will meet you in the meadow.

Two years ago, scientists from the University of Oxford and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden presented 225 people from nine cultures around the world with 10 scents. All agreed that the scent of fresh vanilla was their favorite.

Ahem! Did someone ask about vanilla?! www.nytimes.com/2024/08/04/o...

A bright spot amid the gloom: found a hummingbird nest in our backyard. The chicks are growing fast. 🪶📷

When the world is crappy, get yourself a hug from @kiese.bsky.social. Beautiful conversation between him and @nezhukumatathil.bsky.social. 🥰

W O N D E R bite: you might need to know that kwanzan cherries trees are blooming right now in Mississippi. Such a confection! That color tho!

It’s so weird how we’re all just working like this is still a normal country.

Was descending while diving today: realized a peacock mantis shrimp was directly beneath me, looking up at me with its swivel eyes what I can only describe as a look of crustacean fascination

the owl in legend of zelda watching link do a bunch of side quests instead of rescuing princess zelda

I understand that there are fires rapidly approaching a lot of us right now, & we’re all limited on attention span but fuck. The deep sea is as precious an ecosystem as the national parks, but we understand them much less. Mining them is as ruinous as mining a national park. I’m sick about this.

I mean…come on, redbud tree! How I love your cauliflory: when you burst blooms out of your TRUNK. Like, helloooo SPRiNG! 🌸

99-0. Every senator voted to confirm this ghoul.

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

The Massachusetts governor, the city, and the university needs to drop everything to locate and free this girl and make sure this doesn't happen again. This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.

I really enjoyed World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil! I'm accepting suggestions for other great collections of short essays. 💙📚
