As a consumer, nothing will destroy my interest in a book (and often in the author’s work in general) faster than seeing “virtual voice” on a listing.

This is a not-so-subtle point, but I’m not interested in Democrats winning. I’m interested in democracy winning.

Tonight’s dilemma is how to classify sea snakes on @fathomverse.bsky.social. I suspect they’re not looking for “bony fish”, but phylogenetically… it’s not wrong.

The past few days, I've been struggling to read 1984 for a book club. I suspect I'd be having an easier time if it were fiction.

A new-to-me species of bee this weekend! Rufous-backed cellophane bee (Colletes thoracicus) taking off from a Carolina willow (Salix caroliniana).

I’ve been learning a lot from the whole A to Z series on marine snails, but the species in today’s thread are particularly gorgeous!

whether they’re retiring or not this should be the last term for each of them

Today's class activity involved students analyzing some of my dissertation data on extra-pair mating in juncos. It's Friday afternoon before Spring Break, so attendance wasn't great. But most importantly, of those that were there, over half of them had seen Dirty Dancing! (It's usually only ~10%.)

We should’ve specified which precedent.

This whole thread is amazing. Some hippo biology I already knew, some I didn’t, and some absolutely bonkers hippo-related history. 🦛

🧪 The NSF director is lying to you. Let’s fact check 7 claims from yesterday’s letter to the community, while pointing out 3 critical omissions. 🧵

The President of the United States is vowing to disappear students from college campuses who say things the government doesn't like. There are not enough alarms for this.

If the government can arrest a U.S. resident living here legally without charges and deport them, that is a grave threat to the civil liberties of all of us. Politics has no business here. This is a direct attack on free speech and our constitutional rights. www.cbsnews.com/amp/newyork/...

I’ve spent more time than I probably should have playing @fathomverse.bsky.social this weekend. It’s low-stress and relaxing, contributes to actual science, improves my inverts knowledge, and lets me look at neat pictures of deep-sea critters! (All of which is not true of my big pile o’ grading.)

Fantastic news, explained well in this thread. Let’s hope their funding stays intact…

I got your waste, fraud, and abuse right here

In case your timeline needs a little brightness today. (Mine sure does.)

It was a rude awakening in my freshman year of college when I learned that not only did we *not* have Pulaski Day off school, but also that no one had any idea what I was talking about.

On a question about how to use operant conditioning to train your roommate to do their dishes: Student 1: *describes scenario* (This is cruel and unusual and I would never actually do this to my roommate.) Student 2: *describes very similar scenario* (Maybe I'll try this with my actual roommates.)

If I have to spend my Sunday grading, I suppose sitting on the porch on a beautiful spring day while my dog moves between napping in the sun and napping in the shade is not a bad way to do it.

I wasn’t intending this to be a series, but I found another surprise smiley at my neighborhood park this morning.

Well this should make this year's hurricane season extra-fun.

I loooove @inaturalist.bsky.social and this is a big reason why. They’re instrumental in research and it’s so fun to know that when you go on the app you’re contributing to this knowledge base.

The Trump administration is actively working to kill people.
