That’s my senator! Keep fighting @wyden.senate.gov !!!

The science done at the hutch and care provided by the hutch gave me precious bonus years with my parents. When my mom was diagnosed in 2005 with a rare cancer, her prognosis was a year at best. She got 14 years from experimental research by the late Ollie Press and colleagues. 1/

I was walking through an old cemetery with my kids today, and they asked why there were so many graves of babies. I explained that they died before vaccines and antibiotics, and felt immensely grateful to be parenting in the era of modern medicine. It is asinine to turn our backs on what we have.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME Congress didn’t pass a law requiring NIH-funded trials to include women until 1993. Drug trials with government funding only started including women in the NINETIES And that’s only drug trials! And not ones with private funding! Health research FAMOUSLY excludes women.

You cannot fire so many people and shutter so many agencies and services and not expect things to start to go very bad very quickly. Our job is to highlight not only the chaos and cruelty of the firings, but also the devastating consequences. The public must turn on this madness and soon.

Gutting the CDC right as we’re on the cusp of major outbreaks of transmissible diseases is a very bad idea.

“Educational leaders must not put on a demure face and stay silent while civil society is undermined by the diktat of executive orders. We must not sacrifice academic freedom and a healthy civil society for the short-term gains of anticipatory compliance.” Wesleyan’s President in @slate.bsky.social

Unreal. The US government is dumping Asian and African families and children in random countries that they have no connection to. Dumping, not "deporting." Deportation implies the return of a person to their home country. This is treating people like toxic waste. www.cbsnews.com/news/us-depo...

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this: Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪

It me!

⚕️ What are the 'overhead' costs that the NIH wants to cut? ✂️ Improved and simplified explainer. As usual, feel free to reuse and remix as needed (as long as it's for educational purposes). This is released under a Creative Commons BY-NC license. #NIHcuts #overheadcosts #academicsky

The “we don’t like DEI bc it puts unqualified people in charge of things” is such a WILDLY ironic perspective given just about every single appointment so far

CFPB - closed USAID - closed Medicaid - under attack NIH cancer funding - frozen Department of Education - under attack But do you know who just got a NEW government contract for $38,858,978 literally today? SpaceX — owned by Elon Musk

1. Did you know that Girl Scouts has, for a long time, accepted trans girls and nonbinary scouts? Trans kids are under attack. Every year, I make a thread of trans and nonbinary girl scouts you can get your cookies from. Lets get our cookies from them this year in solidarity!

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

Keep fighting and doing good work, friends!

"They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45" by Milton Mayer This quote explains the lesson of 1930s Germany. You can't wait for the "big event" that galvanizes everyone to do something. By that time it's too late. We know we're on the road now. Do something now!

Thou shalt impeach the motherfucker.

If you're going to SPSP and you want some mentorship/community around LGBTQ+ issues, come to the GASP lunches on Friday!! www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4EAB... #SPSP2025

In 1980, a bipartisan Congress passed the Science and Engineering Equal Opportunities Act of 1980, which authorized the National Science Foundation “to promote the full use of human resources in science and technology through a comprehensive & continuing program to increase substantially

This is the way. Keep the message simple: Elon has his grubby hands all over your money

I’m trying very hard not to stoke infighting but I really hope the people who refused to vote for Harris over Gaza are paying attention. Of course he’s doing this. OF COURSE.

According to a senior CDC official, some of the pages that were removed on Friday have been reinstated due to backlash from the scientific community and the public. Keep speaking up, it matters!

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

👀 Hope to see you at a Methods Roundtable at SAS 2025! Over lunch, we'll connect with an expert and up to 9 peers to dive into key methodological topics in an informal setting. Whether you're new to an area or refining your expertise, get ready to explore new ideas~

Perfectly captured.

Exactly this. It’s generation-spanning damage

A) This isn't over. They are coming for these cuts in their forthcoming budget bill that will also include massive tax breaks for billionaires. B) Don't forget that they were 100% willing to cause enormous harm to millions of people. C) Public outcry still matters and can make a difference!

That didn’t even last a Scaramucci.

Word on the street is that the Oregon Research Institute--a 501(c)3 independent research center with a $7m 2024 budget mostly from NIH, NSF, and DOE--is suspending all operations as of this evening until further notice. 💩➡️🪭

www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/u... Our lack of preparedness for this is embarrassing and inexcusable.

Working w/ a reporter on the consequences of the NIH/NSF freezes (e.g., training pipelines, how grants support clinical time for trials) If you've had a grant impacted, some organizational perspective (e.g., in APPIC leadership/DCT role) + are willing to share your experience please shoot me a DM

Academic Skyers: I am compiling a list of policies and statements from various universities about how they are handling the "pause" in terms of stopping expenditures (or not). Please respond to this post with your institution and materials. THANK YOU!

Trump has deployed active military to help round up migrants and put them into detention camps. The military forced us out of our homes at gunpoint in 1942 because we were considered possibly disloyal Americans. They sent us to internment camps for four years. History is repeating. Pay attention.

Hi, Vox reporter here: If you've had a study section, NIH travel, or other NIH-related meeting cancelled (or not), raise your hand! Reply or DM me, and repost for visibility if you're able. #academicsky @drugmonkey.bsky.social

Also, hey y'all, you know medicine and mental health? Ever get treatment for a thing? Chances are it was NIH that funded crucial advances that led to those treatments.

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

“The impact of the collective executive orders and directives appears devastating.” scim.ag/40ureTO

I’m here for biologists making a big fucking stink but I think psychologists should get in on the action too.
