Just started reading Babel by R.F. Kuang and WOW…just WOW 😮 I already know I am going to miss reading this book when I’m done

NEW: Tulsi Gabbard, now the US director of national intelligence, used the same easily cracked password for different online accounts including a personal Gmail account and Dropbox over a period of years, leaked records reviewed by WIRED reveal.

Today is the day! My book is out in the world. It’s not a friendly world for writing about science or women or especially women’s bodies right now. But I’m so proud to be telling a story that makes a certain type of person very, very angry. www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/casey...

The Trump admin cut of billions of dollars of funds for science research grants without officially canceling the grants, and we don't know the full extent of the carnage because universities are quietly trying to negotiate to get the grants turned back on. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/consp...

Forget just birth order for early language! (it's kinda U-shaped anyway...) We introduce a *better* measure (capturing more variance): a household "child-to-caregiver" ratio, where old-enough siblings are considered caregivers, rather than being another child competing for parental resources. 1/

Amid all the other news, it's easy to become inured to the basic facts here. Öztürk: -Is not accused of committing any crime -Is nonviolent -Was in this country legally -Merely engaged in speech that the administration objects to -Has been locked up for six weeks

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨 WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people. 4 artists & 3 scientists collab'd on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic. Get 'em Squidfacts.bigcartel.com

That was fun! Next Revolution tours are Saturday May 10 & Friday May 16. (Next scheduled Frederick Douglass' Fell's Point tour is Wednesday June 4— feel free to let us know if/when you want to come on one of the "Scheduling by request" tours and we'll work something out!)

As I type this, I have National Bureau of Labor Statistics data on my screen to justify labor demand for a new graduate program. They have lost at least 20% of their workforce.

🧪 BOOM: The AAU, ACE, APLU, and 13 universities just filed suit today against NSF for slashing to 15% indirect rates. Full compliant: www.aau.edu/sites/defaul... Updates: www.aau.edu/resources-aa... A similar group of plaintiffs won a *permanent* injunction against a similar change at NIH.

Read this excerpt of an interview with Jay Bhattacharya, new NIH director. And do not miss the last graf. Via @jocelynkaiser.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...

The most likely place one of the US scientists fired by a 19 year old will end up isn't in some other country's version of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, but like, McDonalds or Doordash. The brain drain will be mostly into shitty gig jobs, not picking up that research elsewhere.

"The biomedical research cuts when they’re polled are like 70-30 or 80-20 against. But it’s only on the edges of the news. You want to push it to the center of the news...Let’s have that vote. Push this issue to the top of the news feed and make Republicans own these cuts."

I'll be on the Twitch show "The Research Left Behind" where I'll be chatting about the things @benjedwards.com wanted to, but did not, include in our @mitpress.bsky.social book "Seeing Red: Nintendo's Virtual Boy". May 8 6pm US Pacific Time - twitch.tv/professor_as...

Also I realized that Nave's book is open access! So you should listen to the interview on @manymindspod.bsky.social and then read: direct.mit.edu/books/oa-mon... (Thanks @mitpress.bsky.social 🙏)

💯 seconded You should listen to this if you want to know why "AI" as we now know it will never be as goal driven as a simple bacterium

Gave a talk at my parents’ retirement community to describe how science is done, and what is at stake. There was a ton of interest, and anyone can do this. Get the word out about how science affects everyone. I’m happy to share slides with anyone who asks- just get in touch! youtu.be/BY_SFgi-Cig

what if we played the blue prince piranesi game on this

New from 404 Media: the Signal clone the Trump administration uses was just hacked. TeleMessage makes a modified version of Signal that archives messages for government agencies, Waltz used it. A hacker got some users' messages, group chats. Hugely significant breach www.404media.co/the-signal-c...

Just published the new edition of “Principles of Development’ from now called “Wolpert’s Principles of Development’ to honour his memory and the origin of this textbooks that aims at distilling the, sometimes elusive, principles underlying animal and plant development shorturl.at/LrOxn

Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.

I just released a preprint reporting on my experiment with generative AI in my Engineering Computations course. TL;DR: It was a mess. The biggest issue? The "illusion of competence." #GenAI #education #edtech

Super happy #xCEBRA was presented as a peer-reviewed proceedings paper today at #AISTATS2025 by @stes.io et al! This extends #CEBRA with the ability to attribute specific inputs to latents over time 🙌 📝: openreview.net/forum?id=aGr... Code: github.com/AdaptiveMoto... Demo: cebra.ai/docs/demo_no...

📣🧪 $25k grants for those who: 1. are working on research on STEM and education (including AI and CS, graduate education and MSIs, and scholarship that aims to reduce inequality), and 2. have had a recently terminated or cancelled grant from NSF. Early-career scholars prioritized

love to hardcode my credentials into the ripoff Signal that I develop for you to commit war crimes

The article quotes a lot of scientists and first amendment lawyers saying that government trying to control scientific journals is bad, and then a movement conservative lawyer whose only qualification (not mentioned) seems to be that at HHS he encouraged anti-LGBTQ discrimination.

arrives before mother’s day

THIS IS NOT LEGAL. Trump is assaulting the law. His ideas (eg assault on universities, science, etc) are not new. What’s new is the direct—and thus far largely successful—attack on the rule of law.

'theory' research in neuroscience is almost exclusively at the systems level. Why? In other fields like systems biology, there are many theorists working at cellular/molecular level. My hope is that neuroscience will follow. As a guy once said: there's plenty of room at the bottom

This is a figure on a preprint

Your regular reminder that NSF grants built the internet and helped the U.S. dominate tech.

WSJ: After tech to manage air traffic failed several times in recent days, 20% of the FAA controllers at Newark Airport walked out. Now, United has canceled 35 daily RT flights from Newark. FAA staffing at Newark is too low to handle the planes scheduled, United's CEO said. Gift link!

“In the face of recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, including large-scale terminations of National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant awards, we have developed a rapid response bridge grant opportunity for impacted scholars”

I am so heartened to this seriously AWESOME #SaveNSF website go up today!!!! Has a take action toolkit with: 1. Press outreach templates 2. Social media toolkit 3. Elected official outreach 4. Talking points Check it out and share widely!!!! Likely more to come. www.savensf.com

Whole admin is soft as hell. They flinch at the suggestion of a counter punch.
