On a side note, when will Royal Parade get the St Kilda road bike lane treatment? Anyone pushing for that? It would benefit so many people #melbourne #bike

It does make it tricky to advocate and build infrastructure for a population that perhaps don't know how useful it could be...

I was recently in a group of about 10 people waiting to cross Sydney road at cnr Union st. No one had pressed the button so the lights cycled without a pedestrian green. Ridiculous!

Am I right that the Capital City Trail is forced on to the road in just two places; Parkville (under consultation) and Abbotsford? Someone should fix that...

and as we rode away, past car-jammed streets and crowded footpaths, i was reminded of the saying (was it Tom Flood?) "bikes deliver the freedom that car advertising promises"

Has anyone done analysis like this for Australian cities? youtu.be/7Nw6qyyrTeI?... to add to those things you've mentioned, there's the reduced public spending because roads etc are so bloody expensive

Open Street map and cycleOSM is my go-to for route finding in any new area, but quickly checking a landmark/business/address location i still find Google maps easier. I assume I'm not alone there - which is why is like to see their bike way-finding improved!

Looking at how to get from one side of Brunswick to another, car: 8 min, PT ~30 min ($10 pp return), bike 13 min - free, no parking, but there's no continuous safe, protected bike paths. Until the council and DoT prioritise non-car travel, those 2-5 km trips are going to be easier by car ☹️

Wonder how that "Tree preservation project" in the first picture is going?

Oh no, this is too true. I felt the same when i realised i enjoyed George Winston's Autumn. I mean, it's no Ólafur Arnolds Living Room Songs but... they'll be the same in my son's eyes

according to a quick look (i.e. could be wrong) at VISTA data discover.data.vic.gov.au/dataset/vict... about 84% of trips in Melbourne and Geelong are less than 17km, and of those at least 60% are made by car. That seems like a nice target for mode change to active transport! Too ambitious?

I think it's also important to learn lessons from Australia's (where I live) implementation of compulsory helmet laws, which saw a large drop in cycling.
My unsubstantiated view is that forcing cyclists to wear PPE allows cities to build unsafe infra, because cyclists are "protected"

My philosophy is you shouldn't need 'special equipment' to use a bike for commuting, shopping trips, etc. The crate gets used all the time, won't get stolen off my bike 'coz no-one knows how cool it is... The downside is the stability is affected a bit, and it flops to the side when parked

So the Jevons Paradox works for ebikes too? Excellent!

I have "Radicalised by an ebike" in my bio for a reason! I was car free but i never expected other people to live that way, until i got an ebike and realised how easy it was. Lots of people can live like this! I love showing people, giving test-rides, talking about them...

I had the same thought, I'd like to see stats about the average travel distance for car park users; it's probably ebikeable. We know the cost per car, how bad is the cost per km?
