A very moving tribute to #AtholFugard. A giant of South African theatre has been laid to rest but his work lives on.

“austerity dressed up as reform” @francesryan.bsky.social on blistering form here. #WelfareNotWarfare www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

@artsemergency.bsky.social, which spreads privilege to give kids mentoring and access to the arts, is having a fundraiser with matched funding from Joe Lycett, Lolly Adefope and Nish Kumar. I'm a long-term supporter -- now's your chance! donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05...

The #Starmer Govt stance on this catastrophic onslaught in #Gaza & #WestBank is reprehensible. Time to stop arming & abetting #Israeli genocidal crimes.

@nesrinemalik.bsky.social on point here. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

“Britain’s social security system has been stripped to the bones: it provides neither security nor enough support…. But the reform required is not of the type Labour is proposing, which will succeed only in further decimating what little remains….” theconversation.com/cuts-and-cap...

The current Labour government is tone deaf, on top of all its other failings. Gaslighting people with poor mental health AND threatening to take away benefits is not going to improve the nation’s wellbeing, is it #WesStreeting? I despair. www.bbc.com/news/article...

If the #US goes thru with its threat to expel the #SouthAfrican ambassador, it will be a new low point. This autocratic regime has taken issue with SA on various fronts, not least the #ICC case against Israel. This trashes all standards of international diplomacy. 1/ apnews.com/article/rubi...

Excellent piece by @ruthpatrick0.bsky.social. Social security is a public good & it’s time to start shifting the narrative away from it being a burden on the fiscus. There are ways to improve the system without making cuts to individuals’ pay. #BenefitsCuts

“A crude fiscal exercise dressed up as reform” says @theguardian.com. #BenefitsCuts www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The arrest by immigration officials of #MahmoudKhalil is an ominous threat against freedom of expression, academic freedom & the right to protest, all of which are enshrined in US law. Shame on #ColumbiaUniversity for its lack of support for Khalil so far.

Short story writers! I am running an 8-week online course, 'What can a short story do?', exploring the possibilities of this wonderful form. We'll read 8 contemporary short stories and use them as a launchpad for our own writing. #booksky #amwriting #shortstories More details ⬇️
