One reason why I think respectability is stupid is because it's often used as a mask. Such judgements are rarely about the clothes themselves, but more often about the bodies beneath them. To wit, no one raised an issue when Elon wore a graphic t-shirt and ball cap to meet the Trump cabinet.

Every other year, we organize an international School on nano-optics 🔬 aimed at early-stage researchers. The 2024 edition, hosted by the Lake Como School of Advanced Studies, was an intense week of science and fun! We are now scouting for locations (in Italy) for 2026 - suggestions are welcome 🙂

We need investments from governments for a research integrity institute which scrutinises what people do and helps to spread integrity and ethics through research institutions, and have honest people funded instead of the dishonest. The problem is complex as some of them control science currently.

Yes, good point, but remember that investing in fundamental research and education is very important more than ever as well. Defense is extremely important, but let’s not forget that highly educated and dedicated people can be the game changer in the very uncertain future.
