Unsolicited writing advice, no: 6: The writing world is divided between people who really want to write, and those who want to be writers. To find out which one you are, visualize yourself as a writer. And if that visualization doesn't show you writing, then do yourself a favour: find another hobby.

#WriterTips Make sure you check your facts! What do you think? Are readers checking for these things 👀?

“At least it can't get any worse” Well done, you just set the universe a challenge it can't refuse.

Gorgeous photo from The Color Nature Library: CATS by Peggy Wratten, 1977. I can't find the photographer's name, unfortunately. None is noted anywhere in the book.

Monday survival kit: 1. Kettle 2. Mug 3. Tea bags 4. Milk 5. Biscuits 6. A “can do” attitude Five out of six will have to do!

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 126: If you're feeling jaded, try a change. Write longhand instead of on a PC, or on your phone instead of your laptop. Move your desk. Work in a different place or at a different time of day. Change your font. Write something new. Fool your brain into making a reset.

Love your mother. #EarthDay.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 78: The best stories are often based on the relationship between a character and their world. If you're having trouble making a book come to life, try reframing it in your mind as: "a (adj.) person in a (adj.) world," and see what you come up with.

Planets in My Head (Young Ornithologist), Yinka Shonibare, 2020. Find this gorgeous piece at The New Art Gallery Walsall as part of a larger group exhibition called Earthbound featuring other wonderful artists. Get yourself down there, it's on until June 8th. It's so good 👌🏼

Unsolicited writing advice no. 13: No artist needs artificial intelligence if they have the real thing.

Have never read this or come across the poet before, but wow!

1. Art is not a competition 2. Sentimentality is not art 3. The camera removed the goal of art being realistic looking & set it free 4. Art is honest authentic emotion - that’s why a great Rembrandt & your child’s drawing, for you, are equally important. 5. Art lifts us out of ourselves

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #41: Read widely. And read current stuff. You can’t expect to make anything good if you don’t follow what other people are making. (This goes double for children’s books: you can’t write what today’s children want just by remembering what you liked as a child.)

If you put an infinite number of Brits in a room with an infinite number of typewriters, a lot of them would bash out a strongly worded letter to the council.

“Each to their own” Translation: You're wrong, but never mind.

You read it too, right?? 🤡

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #1725: Always have something to write. A story, a sequel, a diary, a piece of fanfic. Not only does it keep you mentally and creatively flexible, it also means you're never sitting around, worrying, checking your e-mails and waiting for someone to get back to you...

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #442: Don’t be impatient to get into print before you’re ready. You have as long as you need to write your first novel. You’ll have a year to write your second.

International Women's Day originated from the struggles of working-class women fighting for their rights. That history is often overlooked, as corporations co-opt #IWD’s message. Let's reclaim that radical history. Me for @tribunemagazine.bsky.social (in 2020!): tribunemag.co.uk/2020/03/inte...

Sometimes, the universe sends me tiny little hearts. I was careful not to step on it in case it was someone's dream. #doorstepphotography #candidshots #foundhearts
