Declaring an energy emergency on the same day as curtailing access to wind energy is like when I say I’m starving, but what I really mean is “I like cake. Feed me cake. Please don’t suggest I eat anything other than cake.” Stakes slightly higher in the energy context, though.

To the overwhelmed, I hear ya! We haven’t even figured out what we owe owls, per @elizkolbert.bsky.social, and raptors are significantly less numerous (and not crawling out your bathtub). Still, we should try to learn and understand more about insect experience.

Articles like this help tease apart two different questions: (1) The descriptive question about whether insects are sentient/feel pain and (2) the normative question what we should do about it. I think some people are so overwhelmed by the latter they fear considering the former.
