Next Wednesday, March 5 from 5:00pm-6:30pm I will be doing a book talk and in conversation with Professor Michael Silver on Most Delicious Poison. The event is free and open to the public at the Morrison Library at Berkeley (in the Doe Library building): events.berkeley.edu/Library/even...

@sanders.senate.gov I see that you are the ranking member on the HELP committee--please read the below--we need your help on HELP to get NIH reviews and funding rolling again.

Note that the staffers in most of the points below work for the committees and both the Chair and Ranking Members. Sen. Bernie Sanders is the HELP ranking member.

1. Help: NIH study sections and council meetings not already published in the Federal Register as of Jan. 21 have not been allowed to meet (thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...). This appears to be an 'end run' around a recent injunction and came from HHS officials. You can help (see below):

Reminder to call House Energy & Commerce Committee chaired by KY Rep. Brett Guthrie (202-225-3641) and Senate HELP Committee chaired by LA Sen. Bill Cassidy (202-224-6770). Call Guthrie’s regular office too (202-225-3501). Register your concern regarding:

AND I dedicate this award to the NSF/NIH program officers, scientific review specialists, study section members, and council members whose dedication enabled fair review of our proposals and timely distribution of the precious tax payer funds we need to carry out our vital, basic research.

I am honored to have been selected for the Genetics Society of America Medal--thanks to the @genetics-gsa.bsky.social for all that you do to advance science. I dedicate this award to all of my mentees and collaborators without whom none of the discoveries would have been made!

One of the most rewarding #sciart projects I have ever done was to create drawings for Dr. Noah Whiteman’s book: Most Delicious Poison. Each illustration needed to show the chemical, its origin, and human interaction. I learned so much! #sciencebooks #biotoxins www.mostdeliciouspoison.com

Another @biorxiv-evobio.bsky.social preprint of work led by @wenfeixian.bsky.social. With our Lausanne colleagues, we revisit the Napoleon Oak. An earlier long-read genome had revealed a relatively low number of somatic mutations (www.nature.com/articles/s41...). 1/2

Please circulate widely: We are hiring two Ass Prof tt at the Institute of #ecology and #evolution at @unibern.bsky.social in conservation biology; mathematical & computational ecology We are committed to diverse, inclusive and equitable leadership in research and education tinyurl.com/IEEjobs

Despite 50% less funding due to a canceled "Pests and Beneficials" grant mechanism at USDA 45 days from our conference, we rallied and had a great 16th Plant-Herbivore Interaction Gordon Research Conference. Most speakers paid their way, including those from other continents...resiliency in action.

Concerned about the devastating effect of the cut to NIH indirect costs (from >60% at many to 15% for all) on US biomedical research that takes effect tomorrow? Phone the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), Chaired by Senator Bill Cassidy TOMORROW morning at 202-224-6770.

"One thing is certain: The changes we make ourselves will be healthier than the ones our adversaries demand." New work for @undark.org: undark.org/2025/02/06/o...

Suggestion—call the Office of the Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions (HELP) Committee, chaired by LA Senator Bill Cassidy. Calmly explain that you are concerned further delays in NIH study section and advisory council meetings will do irreparable harm to US science/competitiveness: (202) 224-6770

How is functional variation at large-effect loci maintained in natural populations? Thrilled to share our work showing how beneficial dominance reversal helps fruit flies maintain a resistance polymorphism as selection varies in their environment! A thread 🧵 1/n www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

@rokitaok.bsky.social takes beautiful photos of Japanese insects (check out their work). This Japanese tiger beetle is a classic!

Lovely caption and photo.

Good luck to everybody submitting their MIRA applications in this chaotic time. I am in the thick of it and organizing this GRC 😅.

A word to the wise: we have only 27 slots left out of 200 in this GRC and Jan. 19 is the deadline to register. If you want to go, apply now and then you can register. Many steps. Despite the terrible fires in LA (my heart goes out to all of you in LA), we expect the conference to be held as planned.

Congratulations to former Ph.D. student Dr. Julianne Peláez, who has been awarded a Hanna Gray Fellowship @hhmi.bsky.social to work with Professor Paul Garrity at Brandeis on mosquitoes! Julianne is richly deserving of this award and continues to amaze me with her science. So proud of you Julianne!

Delighted to have been a guest on the Adverse Reactions Podcast of the Society of Toxicology to talk about Most Delicious Poison: www.adversereactionspodcast.com/1756958/epis...

Only about two weeks left to register for the Plant-Herbivore Interaction GRC! It was life-changing for me when I first attended in 2010. We will cover a lot of ground. There is only one session at a time and the atmosphere is rigorous and welcoming. Please repost this: www.grc.org/plant-herbiv...

The Plant-Herbivore Interaction GRC is Feb. 9. Our USDA conference proposal was positively reviewed but won't be funded (at least now) along with ANY others bc of budget freeze! Please consider donating (tax-deductible) so we can still bring in as many folks as possible: my.grc.org/p/contributi...

#Lethiliest bald

A book review for you this week, Noah Whiteman’s Most delicious poison, which looks at plant poisons and their effects on humanity. More at plantcuttings.uk/2024/08/09/p... Cheers! #Botany #PlantScience
