She’s working off Tolkein’s “On Fairy-tales” here, from a bit that goes particularly hard.

I ran out of baby formula but i had some hot Cheetos lying around so it’s all good.

This is the subject of my dissertation! LOTR tells us we might survive the apocalypse and then we’ll have to figure out how to keep going.

This perspective really interests me because I loved BCS a lot more than BB, but the ending felt way too harsh for me, in part because I didn’t remember Saul’s actions well enough in BB to remember if it was deserved.

You know what, I’m gonna go long on this.

None of these guys have actually read the books. They’re operating on the movies and half remembered parts from when they were 12. People pretend to have read things all the time.

I am once again asking for a Bill DeBlasio/Charlene McCray episode of the Sex and the City reboot.

glad i read @nochshorn.bsky.social’s great @unwinnable.com piece on Nightbitch because (although i’m not a parent) it talks about the mushy, disappointing lack of Woman as Art Monster (as selfish) that fits so perfectly with the premise. unwinnable.com/2025/02/12/n...

To be fair I’m often yelling this at the television.

I wrote about Nightbitch, a movie i enjoyed but was very frustrated by, and about the challenges and selfishness of continuing to be an artist after motherhood when you haven’t “made it.” unwinnable.com/2025/02/12/n... @unwinnable.com

every professional writer i know is an absolute pervert for em dashes but go on

Witness is 40. I love Witness. It was on my GCSE Film syllabus. My students loved it and it gave me a chance to watch this lovely scene every year. It also switched me on to Sam Cooke for which I’m forever indebted. It’s one of the most romantic scenes in cinema. youtu.be/vKM0nH6-NnI?...

I’m very happy for the little monsters but I’d love to hear her do “so in love” from Kiss Me Kate!

I can’t believe they announced the reboot of Buffy the DAY AFTER I filed an argument for rebooting Buffy @unwinnable.com I didn’t actually want it to happen unless I was directly involved.

Voice to text cannot learn my babies pretty common name, but it does understand when I’m saying little Timothée Chalamet.

I’d forgotten that The Good Fight ends with Trump announcing his 2024 campaign. Perfect gallows humor.

The implication of this is that I turned into a dog at night and…

My grandma is hot though….

I wrote about Nightbitch, a movie that should have been very relatable to my specific circumstances and instead just made me roll my eyes.

I might have accidentally given myself the same haircut as my Grandma

Unfortunately I don’t actually need to play half an hour of solitaire to get in the zone

Having a kid has dispelled any self-mythology I had about what conditions I needed to get writing done, but it turns out sleep is the real non-negotiable.

I think wrestling with the abstract concepts of law and politics and how they become narrative is a useful thing to toss around the brain right now.

Why is Cake a decent band name but Bread is maybe the worst name for a band ever?

The Good Wife is a cautionary tale about taking comfort in norms, and an argument for treating the law like the building blocks of a story.

Bill Pullman is to not getting the girl what Sean Bean is to dying.

Why hasn’t tide-to-go licensed Chappell Roan yet?

Last July, Neil Gaiman, author of The Sandman and American Gods, was accused of sexual assault. Lila Shapiro goes deep on the allegations and looks at his upbringing in Scientology and his relationship with his wife, Amanda Palmer, and what she knew.

My relationship with the Brooklyn DIY scene is tangential, as is my experience with gaming, but apparently just enough of both to cause me to mis-write Cardboard Computer as Chaos Computer several times in my dissertation. I’m like… OK Computer!

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who is coming to save you? (Looks like I’m about to be impregnated by aliens/the government!)

All the guitar chords I can remember are to Sufjan Stevens songs. Has anyone studied the effects of too much Jon, My Beloved on babies?

I was a Little Mermaid kid because of Part of your World but as an adult the thing I really appreciate about Beauty and the Beast is the distribution of all songs through the movie. A lot of Disney musicals are top heavy but B&B keeps dropping songs through the final act.
