It’s like telling a cancer institute to stop spending so much on cancer research.

In the American fundamentalist tradition, religion is broadly conceived of as a set of beliefs (which is a concept in itself that’s difficult to apprehend). But in many many (most) places “belief” (variously postulated) has nothing to do it with or very little. And there’s everything in between.

We do not all know what religion means and when we try to talk about it we all generally disagree. Scholars disagree; practitioners disagree; outsiders and insiders disagree. And sometimes it sure looks a lot like ethnicity.

To be clear, it’s horrible because of what they will do to the detainees. It is also horrible because of where it is, in Big Cypress.

I'm writing this post in high dudgeon because what the Court endorsed today is unamerican and contemptuous not just of the role of the judiciary but also of the responsibility we have as a nation to those in our custody and those we subject to punishment.
I'm mad as hell. You should be too.
