It’s the final day of "Fischersund: Faux Flora" 🌺 The response to this transformative exhibition has been overwhelming, and we’re so grateful to everyone who’s experienced it with us. Don’t miss your last chance—visit the National Nordic Museum before 5 PM today. 📷 Dean Rutz / The Seattle Times

Celebrating the last day of #NationalSaunaWeek with a look at our own sauna—one of North America’s oldest! Built over 100 years ago, it stood on Finn Hill before moving to Ballard in 1999. More than relaxation, saunas were a space for Nordic immigrants to gather, connect, & keep traditions alive. ♨️

Midwinter Ballard sunsets, you are VERY important to us 🌅💛

🌙🍸 Night owls do it better—especially when it comes to seeing art after dark. Start with a cocktail at Freya Café, then head into "Faux Flora," the exhibition everyone’s talking about, before it closes this Sunday, Feb. 23. We’re open late ‘til 8PM today (and every Thursday).

Seattle's @nordicmuseum.bsky.social is hosting the inaugural West Nordic Film Festival, with recent feature-length films from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. March 14-15, more info here: nordicmuseum.org/events/west-...

🔥 National Sauna Week is here 🔥 1. Organized by the Finlandia Foundation, Feb 16-22 is a week to honor the rich tradition of Finnish sauna—a practice dating back 10,000 years. But saunas are more than just a place to sweat. 🧵👇

Happy Valentine's Day 💌 During our annual collections inventory, our team rediscovered this charming early 20th-century heart-shaped chocolate box. Luckily for preservation purposes (but sadly for us), the chocolates were long gone...

Have you visited the Nordic America Gallery lately? New acquisitions from the Klondike Gold Rush highlight Nordic immigrants seeking fortune in the North—like Inga Sjolseth Kolloen, who braved the Chilkoot Pass in 1898. See her gold nugget necklace, Yukon ring, and more ✨

✨ That’s a wrap on the in-person Sámi Film Festival in Seattle! Special thanks to curator Matti Aikio, Dr. Troy Storfjell, & our partners Scandinavia House, Pacific Sámi Searvi & the Anchorage Museum. 🎥 But the festival isn’t over yet! Catch virtual screenings thru 2/13: nordicmuseum.org/sff

🍿 Only a few more hours until we kick off the Sámi Film Festival in Seattle! Head to Ballard at 7 pm for short film “Biegga, bieggá / Wind Is Winding,” followed by “Skierri: Land of the Dwarf Birches”—the first Finnish film to feature Sámi people speaking their own language 🎟️ nordicmuseum.org/sff

Today is Sámi National Day, a celebration of the Indigenous Sámi of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland & Russia—and a day to fly the Sámi flag. Its bold colors echo traditional clothing & Nordic flags, while the circle nods to Sámi shamanic drums, the sun & the moon.

We love to see it, @goballardfc.bsky.social 👏👏👏

We’re deeply saddened by the passing of visionary artist Ginny Ruffner, whose career helped shape Seattle’s glass art legacy. Her “Project Aurora,” a 20-ft LED installation in our entryway, embodies her boundless creativity. We hope you'll stop by to experience it & remember our dear friend Ginny.

Knocked out by this exhibit at Seattle's Nordic Museum. Co-created by a member of the band Sigur Rós, with every fictional flower having its own scent. Extended into February.

I agree with the @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social you should come see Faux Flora at the @nordicmuseum.bsky.social this winter! www.seattletimes.com/entertainmen...

Architect @pasiwidgren.bsky.social has returned to Finland’s frozen Lake Pitkäjärvi to “draw” another winter masterpiece with his trusty shovel. Since 2016, his ephemeral designs have been meticulously etched on the lake’s surface, destined to vanish with the next bout of fresh snow or melting ice ❄️

Big news: the Sámi Film Festival is back! 🎉 Next month we celebrate the stories of the Sámi—an Indigenous people of the Arctic regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, & Russia—through an incredible lineup of newly released & classic cinema 🎥 We hope you'll join us: nordicmuseum.org/sami-film-festival

💫 Your (wet) Friday reminder to take a cue from the coldest countries on Earth and find time to slow down and recharge this weekend. Need a little more guidance? Kari Leibowitz, PhD, will be hosting a virtual "How to Winter" workshop next Tuesday ➡️ nordicmuseum.org/events/how-to-winter-workshop

✨May you find your own little bit of "peiskos" this holiday season. Just a reminder: the Museum is closed today and tomorrow—stay cozy, friends.

❄️ On this (wet) first day of winter, we’re taking a cue from Nordic cultures and learning to embrace the season. Kari Leibowitz, health psychologist and winter mindset expert, shared these tips in her recent interview with @npr.org:

✨ Notice something new in Nordic America? We recently rotated light-sensitive objects, including our bunads—traditional Norwegian folk costumes. The one on the left has rock 'n' roll roots: it belonged to the grandmother of two founders of the iconic rock band Heart, Mike and Roger Fisher 🎸
