one of those books you recommend to a friend so strongly that when she loves it too and wants to talk about it every day, you've now decided to read it again (3rd time)... @noreenmasud.bsky.social

always the wide stance

Maybe you should talk to some artists, Lisa? They'll tell you about the impact of government funding. Honestly this government are plumbing new depths. To talk about "virtue signaling" in what's a pathetic attempt to signal you're "anti-woke" or some such nonsense is hypocritical and dense.

The data isn't as simple as any of these consultancies like to present it as; and paying them a lot of money doesn't mean they're capable. And yet, all our managers are enthralled with them, despite their track record of failure, and despite HAVING ACTUAL EXPERTS ON PAYROLL.

This is the future for Britain's universities: far more AI, much more 'curated learning' (AKA few or no optional modules), all services centralised, nowhere near as many academics. You know the worst thing about that? It won't even relieve most of the financial pressure.

Imagine how much effort you have to put into looking at the terrible state of the arts in Britain and then deciding that it must be protests and boycotts that are responsible rather than wilful neglect and underfunding.

Judith Butler: "Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic, because that means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice, and a third, a fourth, and then what happens?"

turns out you can totally baffle, floor and amaze your criminal cats by simply placing a treat under a sheet of paper

honest to god I really am trying to work

I wish more people took the time to educate themselves on the completely asymmetrical bad faith with which alleged "free speech" organisations attempt to make martyrs out of assholes. Sometimes overtly abusive assholes.

The redundancies that aren't as visible in the numbers but that sure as hell are visible in classrooms & careers of colleagues we've lost this way. These letters @theguardian.com are what they've been trying to publish since Chakrabortty's piece on QMUL in 2023 www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Next Wednesday (26/2) @chrisjpearson.bsky.social will be joining us to deliver the CEH Annual Lecture on his new book Collared: How We Made the Modern Dog. The lecture will take place in the Old Council Chamber, Wills Memorial Building, Bristol at 5-6.30pm. All welcome!

on the hunt for (other) faceblind writers and artists - if you are one, or know one, let me know!

Four pages into a prestigious new nature book and the heavy sense of Will This Do is already pervading my reading experience.

Another PDF request! Would anyone have access to Yosef Kaplan, An Alternative Path to Modernity: The Sephardi Diaspora in Western Europe (Brill, 2000)? I'm interested in chapter 7, 'The Jewish Profile of the Spanish-Portuguese Community of London During the Seventeenth Century'. Thank you!

the internet suggested I put double-sided tape on countertop to repel cat. length of delay of cat crimes: 0 min. time taken to get double-sided tape off counter: 1 hour 17 min.
