Lord of Light art by Jack Kirby, 1978. Later coloured by Mark Englert. From Heavy Metal magazine issue 276‬

A decade ago you couldn’t have imagined that an American administration would sympathise with Russia in a war, repeat their propaganda, and belittle their enemies. But now, not even two months into a new administration, we’re watching exactly that.

Continuing on short fiction that made the world a better place to be last year, @nosubstance.bsky.social 's "Shadow Films" in @lightspeedmagazine.com is a perfect distorted mirror. www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/shad... 📚💙📚 🪐📚🪐

A sad day to hear about Gene Hackman. He was one of my favourite actors. Seemed capable of anything, even in his bad films. But it was his great films where he shone: The Conversation, French Connection, Unforgiven, Royal Tenenbaums, and more than I can list here. RIP.

Discovered today that praise I give to books by calling them pretty decent is interpreted by Americans as anything but. It's a shame, but what I guess the real unfortunate thing is all the fine people I've described as 'pretty decent' to Americans. Sorry about that.

This week's issue of No Substance is here. I spend a bit of time talking about anti-intellecualism, fancy trash, and how you can read whatever you want, even if that is dinosaur porn. It's just a normal day with normal things.

Australian election coming soon, so, here's a vid about it.

Here’s a review of The Red Labyrinth by @micahsvernon.bsky.social that is really thoughtful and excellent. You should definitely have a listen, sub to the channel, then head over and preorder a copy for you and your rarely seen friends who may have forgotten you love them.

One of life’s great pleasures is to be an arrogant insufferable piece of shit about the art you love. Can’t understand why anyone wants to take that joy away from someone.

Reviewed Ben's upcoming novella—I highly recommend you all read it when you can.

Movies you've watched more than six times, using only GIFs

I look at my new writing, at how terrible and awful its words are, and I think I should delete it, but that's how how it works, I know. You fix words. You draft and redraft. You can never be satisfied, but you can become accepting.

Yesterday’s No Substance if you missed it

This week's No Substance is about two versions of Cosmopolis, the first being Don DeLillo's novel, and the second being David Cronenberg's adaptation of it. One is totally awful, I promise.

The cat came home yesterday, a lot better than when he left. He’s roaming round today, eating, a bit restless but also a bit tired. It is the best thing. I can’t express how good it is to see after this week. And of course, now, our life of crime begins so that we can pay off his vets.

Geoff Ryman's new novel, Animals, is now up for pre-order.

Some kind thoughts for our boy, Capote. He's back at the vet again. He has been in and out for the last week. No one is quite sure what's wrong with him, other than he's quite unwell (but not unwell in a way that shows up on any tests).

Robert McGinnis turned 99 years old a couple of days ago. A living legend and huge artistic influence for many in comics.

No newsletter this week, I'm afraid. I spent most of last week lost in work and shuffling a cat to the vet and trying to get him feeling better (on the way there, hopefully), I'm just behind on everything. Apologies to those who read.
