It's impossible to overestimate how damaging this would be for everything from routine weather forecasting, to modeling and tracking hurricanes, to preparing for climate change. Every American will be worse off if this happens. For decades to come. (Gift link): www.nytimes.com/2025/04/11/c...

Adolf Hitler's “Mein Kampf” is still on U.S. Naval Academy shelves. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and “Memorializing the Holocaust” are not. An order by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office led to a purge of books that are critical of racism — but preserved volumes defending white power.

We have an administration that sees the solution to collective action problems as costs to be eliminated, rather than value created.

Making a group of people stateless is what happens prior to committing atrocities against them.

It's tempting to ascribe this to malice specific to Ms. Öztürk but no, this is actually pretty standard medical care in a lot of jails and prisons and ICE detention centers (same with the failure to provide religiously-appropriate treatment).

One sign that we are living under an authoritarian regime is that a lot of people are acting like they are living under an authoritarian regime.

My son and daughter got social Security payments because their mother died at 35. Jen earned that money and the family needed that little extra boost each month having lost a breadwinner. These people trying to shame recipients are monstrous.

In Nazi Germany, the targeted population was encouraged to self-deport and the state sought to impoverish them to force them to leave.

Freedom of speech is when the government arrests people for protesting the President's car company.

thought crimes are now illegal in the united states. it’s truly baffling that their anyone was ever convinced by the right being pro “free speech”. anyone who gave any credence to that argument is a rube

Oh cool, the thought police have arrived.

This is precisely why I harp on the negative influence of reactionary centrists so often: Exaggerating the radicalism of the left gives voters permission to support the radicalism of the right. If both candidates are deranged fascist liars, why not support the one that's gonna cut your taxes?

You wouldn't know it from the front pages of NYT or the Post, but a stunning 3-to-5.2 million Americans took to the streets Saturday with a simple message: "No King" Congress passed the law that enabled a dictator, and Congress can stop the madness. My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/comm...

Pretty amazing local TV did *AN HOUR LONG* live hit from the march. This is what changes opinion on Trump's immigrant policies: more people learning about reality.

Over 2000 protesters are showing up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for the Hands Off! protest. Thank you, Pennsylvania!

What I think was *really* beneficial about Hands Off is that people need to see (in real life) that they’re not alone. In-person events and marches can really fill up people’s fighting tanks, so to speak. And this regime has handed us a really really long, tedious, and difficult fight.

We expected hundreds of thousands of people yesterday. Instead, millions of Americans flooded the streets to demand an end to Trump’s authoritarian power grab. Trump and Musk have spent their first 75 days in office trying to overwhelm us and make us feel powerless, but we’re not going anywhere.

New York Fucking City. A full mile of people filled to the brim. Fascism is going to lose.

the only response that’s been more muted has been from political media and political elites. regular people once again have been more than pulling their weight

Simultaneously an attack on free speech, higher education, and the international students who subsidize American students

#HandsOff rally in in Lancaster, PA! Legit brought tears to my eyes.

Lancaster PA: Penn Square was great for traffic, many cars honking in support. Signs were sassy, creative, earnest, worried, angry. Strangers sharing stories, trying to make sense of what is happening, asking what more we can do going forward. I hope others had inspiring experiences today. #HandsOff

Not all “Hands Off” events were in-person. I attended two virtual events centering chronically ill and disabled people for @motherjones.com, who are terrified about attacks to Medicaid, Section 504, research funding, education and more. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
