Chromatin and cryoEM afficionada. Still a fan of crystallography. Avid Colorado hiker. Will call out ugly nucleosome cartoons. Come for the science, stay for the mountain pictures and snark. Opinions and snark are my own.

mood.

Keep in mind: these are AWARDED grants, with Notice of Awards. The federal government is not honoring existing contracts with this university, refusing to reimburse for costs charge on awarded grants.

Ahead of No Kings Day, a couple trainings we have coming up that might be useful: Safety and Deescalation: www.mobilize.us/nokings/even... Know Your Rights (w/ACLU): act.aclu.org/a/2025-kyr-t...

43% cut to dollar amount awarded in federal research grants by NIH in Trump ‘26 budget. 1800 fewer grants. The 27 ICs will be restructured into 8. www.statnews.com/2025/06/06/n...

Dear lord: "On Capitol Hill, at least one committee was told recently by a whistleblower that all research grants to the state were going to be cancelled." The U of Cali system alone accounts for $4B+ per year in federal R&D. If true, let's hope for another all-or-nothing fight like Harvard's.

Deep breaths everyone

One year ago today 🌿 The one true cross on Limestone Ridge, looking across Limestone Gap to Limestone Ridge North. This windswept spot at 8,000' hosts many rare plants, especially cushion plants that are adapted to hot dry summers w/ desiccating wind & extremely cold winters. Just south of Wyoming.

Excited to share that my work in the @aaronwhiteley.bsky.social lab describing chaperone-mediated phage sensing by a bacterial NLR-related protein is out in @plosbiology.org!

Flybase lost all of the NIH support overnight - it is a disaster for the community. Please consider donating. I just did! www.philanthropy.cam.ac.uk/give-to-camb...

Matchstick quilting with a neutral thread color? What would you do? It’s 30”x30” and I think it will be my protest quilt on the taco’s birthday parade day. (The pattern comes out June 14, find GettingJazzyWithIt on Etsy to get the pattern!)

this is amazing

For those who don't know Randy Pausch, he was a computer scientist who gave "The Last Lecture" at CMU when he had terminal pancreatic cancer. Lots of inspiration and life lesson. Worth the time to give it a watch (whether or not you have done so in the past. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_...

Thank you @joshuasweitz.bsky.social for making this visually effective set of plots that puts into perspective the scale of the announced cuts to NIH, NSF and NASA

👇🧪👇

Remember folks, the budget cuts for NSF and NIH *can still be stopped*. That is a luxury not granted to our agency science colleagues who have or could still lose their jobs from the top down. So - Fight! Speak up! Pay attention!

Meeting of the four #cryoET centers (funded by the NIH Common Fund), in beautiful Boulder! great exchange of ideas and totally nerding it out over all things cryoET. Great to hear from users from all across the country and their impressive science. #NIH at its best.

It blows my mind to think that I've been at @addgene.bsky.social for over 1.9 million of the 2 million plasmids shared. Very proud of this organization and what it's contributed to the scientific community (and what the community has contributed to Addgene!).

I have had the privilege to train many chinese students over many years. They enriched our lives and did great science. Many are still here and contribute to the US scientific enterprise. The push to revoke student visas is cruel and unnecessary. We must push back. www.npr.org/2025/05/28/g...

🎉 We’re absolutely thrilled: SCALE has been selected as a DFG Excellence Cluster! A huge thank you to our incredible team—this would not have been possible without your dedication and talent. 🙌 @dfg.de #ClustersOfExcellence #SCALEcluster 🧵

NIH funding supporting the HMMER and Infernal software projects has been terminated. NIH states that our work, as well as all other federally funded research at Harvard, is of no benefit to the US.

A very special first post on Bluesky: I’m excited to share that I’ll be starting my lab at Penn State this coming January in the Dept of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology! I’ll be hiring at all levels soon. Check out updates, thoughts, and positions on the lab account: @hanna-lab.bsky.social

Looking at some water from an algal culture for fun and came across these bizarre creatures, does anyone know what they might be? This looks like it might be part of their development where they initially emerge within this hairy chamber then hatch as they grow (?) more pics to follow 🧫

this 👇 makes my point. Industry, speak up already. you arent shy when it comes to protecting your profits and privileges? so why not protect your vital pipeline?

another great read from @theatlantic.com www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

wish i was there! @nhoitsma.bsky.social will do a stellar job representing the lab . Also, is that a #nucleosome on the slide? 😘

cannot overstate how bad this will be for universities at every level, from the financial (intl students pay $$$), logistical (intl grad students teach many courses), productivity (they also do a bunch of research), to more nebulous but still imp things like making campus life vibrant + diverse
