After 17 years my OCD living nightmare is ended. 😵‍💫 My earliest Stone Curlew was 29th(!) February 2008, but my Excel spreadsheet 📊could not handle it, so I had to have it down as 28th, with a note beside it to explain. All that pain is now gone. Behold! My earliest Stone Curlews (3) today. 28/02/25

🎵Love is in the air!🎵 Fab flirty dancing - with leaves! - as a pair of #curlew meet up after months apart. 😍 After 20 mins thought I should leave… ☺️ #ornithology #YorkshireDales #waders #ukbirds #ukwildlife

Right now, the UK Government is considering cuts to the nature-friendly farming budget – the biggest pot of funding for nature. Here’s why that would be a disaster for farmers, food security, and wildlife. A thread. 🧵👇

🌊 Today in @nature.com: Is the AMOC on the brink of collapse? Unlikely before 2100—but the risks are real 🚨 We find Southern Ocean winds keep this vital ocean "heat engine" running, even under extreme #climatechange. But the Pacific holds a surprise… tinyurl.com/yt6u4e7d Let’s explore 🧪👇

What if we told you vultures save us billions every year? 🦅 Vultures in Southern Africa provide $1.8B in ecosystem services, but populations have dropped 97% due to poisoning, belief-based use, and electrocution. Without them, ecosystems suffer. 💔 🔗 Read more: www.birdlife.org/news/2025/02...

@bbs-birds.bsky.social data shows Turtle Dove to have the fastest rate of decline of any UK breeding bird since 1994. Whilst improving productivity and adult survival are important, this study suggests increasing adult survival could have the greatest benefits. @rspb.bsky.social #ornithology

The Slender-billed Curlew is now considered extinct—30 years after its last confirmed sighting. Its tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger international conservation efforts for migratory waterbirds. Read the full story here: www.unep-aewa.org/en/news/mark...

Great study. But struck by this paragraph in the paper, re Nightingales and deer browsing/habitat change. The wane of the 'deer hypothesis' of browsing driving UK woodland bird declines? A dominant theory 10-15 yr ago, impacting policy, but strong evidence never transpired. #ukbirding #ornithology
