Next week is the climatologically coldest part of winter, and nature is doing its part to remind us. In addition to very cold temperatures, lake effect snow will be likely for areas of western NY. Here's a snapshot of what the week may look like ⤵️

Lake effect snow has been affecting multiple interstates across upstate NY this afternoon. Currently, locally heavy snow is affecting the I-90 Thruway between Syracuse and Albany. Other locally heavy snow is affecting I-86 across the Southern Tier. Drive with caution!

Planning on seeing the ball drop in Times Square for New Year's Eve? Be weather aware, as moderate to heavy rain is possible within a few hours of midnight that night. If you're curious how recent December 31sts played out, we have you covered ⤵️

Gameday is here! Our last Buffalo Bills' forecast is below. The stadium and nearby areas have likely received about 20" of snow. At 9AM, the heaviest snow is near the stadium but is likely to shift south this afternoon before kickoff. How long it stays will determine how much new snow falls.

We've seen some impressive totals across NY from lake effect snow, with peak totals between 37-45" at this time. The heaviest snow east of Lake Erie is expected to begin shifting south early Sunday morning, while heavier snow near Watertown may linger longer into Sunday before moving south.

The weather forecast remains about the same for the Buffalo Bills game Sunday night. Lake effect snow is moving into the area now, and will likely remain through early afternoon Sunday, producing ~2 feet of snow. More isolated snow showers may continue during/after the game.

Latest from the NYS Weather Risk Communication Center notes the snow bands are currently in southern Erie County and will head north towards the Buffalo metro region by mid-day tomorrow.

Forecasts have favored a steady increase in the total snowfall expectations for areas near the Buffalo Bills stadium. At this time, the heaviest snow is expected Saturday afternoon into Sunday, with snow shifting south before the game. Travel may be hazardous, so be weather aware if attending!

There is still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding the weather before, during, and after the Buffalo Bills' game on Sunday night. Here's our summary of possible impacts during this time frame. If you're traveling to the game, be weather aware and check National Weather Service forecasts regularly.

Happy Thanksgiving! Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating with people's holiday plans. Rain and wet snow will produce less than ideal driving conditions and possibly power outages where wet snow piles up.

This Thanksgiving, we're thankful for the many meteorologists across NY and beyond helping keep NYers safe - whether they're NWS employees, private weather vendors, or our very own hard-working team of SWRCCers. Here's a smattering of the type of products our own team has put out. #nywx

While we haven't seen any snow here in Albany, the top NYS snowfall report as of 3PM exceeds 17" in Delaware County. The weight of this heavy, wet snow is causing significant power disruptions across the Catskills and Southern Tier, in what has proved to be a very elevation-dependent storm.

The potential for a significant lake effect snow event this week has greatly diminished. However, a storm later this week will bring beneficial rainfall for areas of southeastern NY, where 90 day rainfall is ~10" below normal. Some wind and snow is also possible. Here's what we know now ⬇️

If you're in NY, tune in to In Focus on Spectrum news Sunday morning at 1030AM to hear us talk about our Center and recent weather in NY!

Two Fire Weather Watches were issued for New York State this afternoon by the National Weather Service. These are the first Fire Weather Watches EVER issued in the Fall in New York State. #nywx

There is some potential for a more significant lake effect snow event in New York beyond seven days, but this is FAR from a certainty. Use trusted sources such as the National Weather Service. We put together a short summary of where we're at now, and when we might know more. #nywx
