Barry Blitt’s first 100 days cover for the New Yorker.

When does the winning start?

6 weeks ago today, planes flew a few hundred people to El Salvador, where they’re being held at CECOT — a place from which Salvadoran officials brag no one is ever released — at US expense. Their continued detention there is our continued shame.

Trump’s Russia “deal” makes Neville Chamberlain look like Churchill

Newsom: In 2023, Californians contributed $83.1 billion more to the federal government than we received back. And for your viewers: that other state—Texas—took $71.1 billion more than it contributed to the federal government. California: $83 billion, contributor. Texas: taker.

My eldest daughter Claudia once asked me why there isn’t a provision that says that convicted felons can’t be president and this was *exactly* my answer

A friend of mine has coined the term “Pinocheting” to describe what the government is doing to these prisoners.

me, weeks ago: Mr. Trump, sir, can you please rise to the dignity of your office and stop discussing invading Canada Trump: ok fine here’s a mass kidnapping operation for you instead me: wait no

We could have been talking about $25K down payment assistance for new homeowners in a thriving economy right now, but here we are.

Before the election, I warned that there is no safe haven under authoritarianism. If they can ship Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a foreign prison—accused of no crime, with no trial—they can do it to anyone. Americans of conscience must stand against this now.

worth reiterating that in literally any other context a 10% tariff on Japan alone would be getting wall to wall financial news coverage, would be considered the largest trade war escalation in modern American history and the dumbest economic policy move by a President in decades

Goldman on Trump threatening to deport Americans to a gulag in El Salvador: "This is the stuff of dictators ... Republicans in Congress have completely acceded to his wishes and turned over all of their own authority to Donald Trump. There is no check and no balance from Congress."

NYT: "The White House scoffed at the prospect of returning a Maryland man who had been mistakenly deported, despite court orders urging it to pursue his return." I'd like to draw your attention to the word "urging." Courts don't "urge." That's not how courts work, NYT. Stop laundering his fascism.

AOC: When he talks about rapists and criminals, he should look in the mirror

Four R senators and four R House members could announce they're caucusing with the Dems for now, and will vote for Schumer for Majority Leader and Jeffries for Speaker, because the threat to the rule of law is dire. Meanwhile, they'll work with Democrats to construct guardrails against dictatorship.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

1/4. On the White House’s theory, if they abduct you, get you on a helicopter, get to international waters, shoot you in the head, and drop your corpse into the ocean, that is legal, because it is the conduct of foreign affairs.

Exactly. Trump and Miller want to make El Salvador their Generalgouvernement, and Bukele is stepping up to be their Hans Frank.

So, if I understand correctly, the President of the United States is saying that the Supreme Court of the United States consists of nine “sick people,” including three whom he appointed. apple.news/AMHDqIFcpRxi...

So basically he moved the deck chairs around a little.

And wait until we see, on the other side of the ledger, higher borrowing costs (from decreased demand for Treasury securities) and decreased revenues (from laxer tax enforcement if not also tax cuts).

Tax cuts account for 38% of the national debt today, while recession responses and spending increases each caused 29%. And now the Republicans want to pass $5.3T more tax cuts. We can’t keep this up. My @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social

The debt-to-GDP ratio is unacceptably high to begin with. Republicans are digging us deeper into that hole. My @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social

Here’s what’s a stake when we pile on the debt: In 2024, the US spent more servicing the debt than on our military. My @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social Chart

Donald Trump has made himself—and by extension, us—the laughing stock of the world.

"Nearly three million voters chose to keep Justice Riggs in power. They rejected Griffin’s partisan Republican campaign. Now Griffin is trying to undo that decision." www.democracydocket.com/opinion/the-...

Rand Paul: "The whole [tariffs] debate is so fundamentally backwards & upside down. It's based on a fallacy & the fallacy is this: that somehow in a trade, someone must lose. That somehow when you trade with someone, someone is taking advantage of you... I have a trade deficit with my grocery store"

if only there were a constitutional equivalent to firing someone

This sucks, but also means if you want coverage, contact your paper in advance of an action. Give them quotes. Send them to folks to interview. We did this for the NOAA protests and got wall to wall coverage for a week, with frontpages, opeds, and followups.

WARNER: Can you explain how it helps natl security or our trade balance - I loved your fancy Greek formula which was bad math on steroids - how with a trade surplus Australia got hit with a 10% tariff as well? GREER: Australia has the lowest rate available WARNER: We have a trade surplus!

Trade deficit. I have bought food from say, Chilis. They have never bought food from me. There is a trade deficit with Chilis. I’m still doing fine. The trade deficit argument SOUNDS compelling, but it’s a straw man with no relevancy
