Unless you’re counting on stuff reseeding itself, it’s hard to mulch too heavily. Like I’ve gone 4-6” thick before. You just want to leave the plant crowns clear.
Lowes here has the 2 cubic ft bags which may be more reasonable?

I ended up having to put fencing around mine outside the fence AND dumping shredded paper as mulch so they’d stop blowing my leaves away. Something about the clearly placed there material seems to stop them.

It would probably depend on how level the concrete is, if it’s going to form a good “seal”. If your boxes aren’t going to be flush all the way around, I think it would be okay given your average rainfall and careful watering

I am often a lone voice in the wilderness but zucchini sautéed with butter and onions is delicious and I could eat it most nights. Zucchini is USUALLY easy unless you’re in the SE with too many fucking squash borers and no patience for insecticide. And zoodles are tasty too.
