"i call for the immediate firing of kristi noem as well as suspension of the agents who attacked our senator, pending their firing as well. i call for a full withdrawal from los angeles and the senate will cease to do business until our demands are met."

House Democrats need to bring articles of impeachment against Kristi Noem, while Senate Democrats need to bring that chamber to a fucking halt.

And here's where you can find a protest near you for tomorrow.

Going on my honeymoon. Please USA, keep things together for 2 weeks??? I'm with everyone in spirit on Saturday, everyone stay safe. Don't text.

Carly's looking for a postdoc to join her team at @oxfordphysics.bsky.social to work on Europa exploration - go join them! #planetaryscience

Adding alt text because yes, this is important to know

There is an old saying, perhaps now out of favor but worth resurrecting in this moment: As goes California, so goes the nation.

In the past week, a union leader has been arrested, a U.S. Rep charged with a crime, a U.S. Senator violently handcuffed, and reporters shot with rubber bullets and detained. There is no ambiguity. This is a regime operating as an authoritarian. Americans who believe in liberty must oppose it.

The only reason prisons are able to pay incarcerated individuals less than minimum wage is because the 13 amendment exempts punishment in prison from the prohibition on slavery. They're legal slaves. That doesn't apply to civil detention for immigration. It's blatantly unconstitutional.

We are in the final days of our effort to collect signatories on our petition to protect NASA science and SO CLOSE to our 20,000 signatory goal. ANYONE in the world can sign. Help us reach our goal: planet.ly/petition

my team and i took an image of a cold, strange planet with JWST! press release out now: webbtelescope.org/contents/new...

I'm literally reviewing NIH grants today (essentially for free, in my spare time). Where along with other experts, I help decide which proposals are the best. Maybe Sen. Britt should learn more about how NIH grant review works?

Amidst all the horrific news for astronomy lately, I'm still excited to share a new work that I was a part of, led by Kielan Hoch at @stsci.edu ! Using @nasawebb.extwitter.link , we found a new circumplanetary disk and strong silicate absorption in the YSES 1 planets. www.tcd.ie/news_events/...

Beautiful new results from my @stsci.edu colleagues Kielan Hoch and collaborators (on here: @mattkenworthy.bsky.social, @offallingstars.bsky.social , @bmacastro.bsky.social , @balmer.bsky.social) with JWST + MIRI www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

This is what it looks like without a United States Congress.

Be sure to sign the petition. We are facing elimination of high value planetary missions including OSIRIS-APEX, VenSAR (for EnVision), HelioSwarm, MAVEN, Mars Odyssey, Juno, and more.

If you're a Marine or other service member being mobilized to Los Angeles and you'd like to apply for conscientious objector status, call the GI Rights Hotline to get some guidance on your options: 1-877-447-4487

i will be releasing one (1) pixel of our coronagraphic image of this cool* planet each day, up until our AAS 246 press release on tuesday. you can get a sneak peek if you come see my talk on monday. i will not be stopped. *literally

The craziest thing about this fight between Trump and Elon Musk is that Republicans are trying to take away health care from 16 million people to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

The thing that bothers me most about the Trump and Musk row is atmospheric concentrations of CO2 just passed 430 parts per million for the first time in human history leading to more intense temperatures that threaten to trigger climatic feedback loops that could destroy civilisation itself.

This is a reminder that Congress can act at any time to both #ImpeachTrump for all of his crimes and hold Elon Musk accountable for all of his crimes.

Earth and planetary science gives us the tools we need to understand our complex and changing world. Ensuring a future of economic prosperity, national security, public health, and planetary wellbeing relies on funding basic research. @agu.org

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Here's NASA astrophysics, if I read the president's proposed budget correctly. 🔭

There is an economic multiplier to every science dollar spent. Just from the University of Arizona, the proposed cuts to NASA/NSF could pull hundreds of millions of dollars out of the southern Arizona economy. We are a place that has "Space is Wildcat country" banners on poles.

The NASA planetary science fleet chart if the president’s budget is enacted.

Yet again, USA: Tell your members of Congress to fund NASA, NSF, and other research agencies as recommended by the National Academies. Rather than the wholesale dismantling of them that Trump and those with him want.

The Presidents Budget Request for NASA is out. It’s a bloodbath Canceled are DAVINCI, VERITAS, Juno, OSIRIS-APEX, US participation in ExoMars and EnVision… Huge cut to R&A. No funding to begin development of the Uranus Orbiter. If you’ve ever cared about NASA, time to contact congress.

The Luddites had a great phrase for what they opposed: "Machinery hurtful to commonality." It's an excellent reminder that being a Luddite doesn't mean you hate technology, but that you hate the way capitalists create and use technology to destroy community and human flourishing.

Do not capitulate in advance; not to fascism, not to AI, not the conservative turn which generally comes with hard times. Their control is based almost entirely on fear & surrender. The only real efficacy of a panopticon is that people police themselves bc they think they're being watched.

All NSF GRFPs to students choosing to attend Harvard in the Fall were just terminated

Proud that my first student's first paper is now up on arXiv! Huseby, Moran, et al., coming soon to PSJ! Read on for how stellar flares might influence the spectra of photochemical hazes in water-rich sub-Neptunes :) arxiv.org/abs/2505.13692

Dear business bro having a loud phone call on this train, Stop.

My takeaway from Pope Day is that people around here are REALLY hungry for things to jaw about that don’t feel like the end of the world.

Me: wondering why I can't focus this morning Fitbit: you got 4 and a half hours of sleep last night oh.

Going to point out that Columbia is doing this two days after awarding Pulitzers including for Gaza coverage. They like the idea of free speech not the reality of it.

If you use gen AI, I do, in fact, think less of you and your integrity. You're benefiting from intellectual theft, never mind the environmental costs. And if you work in a field that depends on intellectual/creative work - so much the worse.

I was asked to join in a series of blog posts about the importance of public lands, so I wrote about how the Grand Canyon, and the Solar System, is so much more than a checklist of things to see. It inspires us to ask questions, learn, and grow: www.grandcanyon.org/about/news/g...
