Books I would recommend to others One of the great American novels, DeLillo ties the rapid evolution of late 20th century America through the arc of a single character’s life and an errant baseball in reverse. An anti-postmodernist postmodern novel. #Books #BookSky

Save my Navy.

National Jazz Appreciation Month A hauntingly beautiful and picturesque music from a virtuoso of jazz guitar. "So May It Secretly Begin," sticks long after the last note, but all of these songs are groundbreaking even today. #Jazz #JazzSky

Of course, the former trollish host of "Politically Incorrect" would hide behind six million dead Jews as a rebuke to David's very effective takedown. #BillMaher #LarryDavid #Quisling www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

National Jazz Appreciation Month Hank Mobley with Art Blakey and two bandmates from Davis’ rhythm section produced a hard bop classic. All the ingredients were there and Mobley executed in the lead, the communications of his bandmates a lesson in artistry. #Jazz #JazzSky

Books I would recommend to others Like many at the time, I thought that Greer’s assertion that most men were misogynistic and women were taught self-loathing was a step too far. With hypermasculinity culture and pro-natalism, it is there for all to see. Read and learn. #Books #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month As I write, I cannot help but think of the "Kenny G is Not Jazz" comment by Pat Metheny. Regardless, some smooth multi-genre players fall into the jazz tradition. Golub was one, his talent apparent. "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" is a guilty pleasure. #Jazz #JazzSky

Books I would recommend to others - Earth Day A pioneer of environmental awareness, Carson authored a series of books about the aquatic world before publishing the results of her four-year project about the effects of pesticides on the environment. Still frustratingly relevant. #Books #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month Ellington, more than any jazz composer, proved the argument that jazz is America’s classical music. He applied the genre to all forms. Here in an essential album, he makes the connection to gospel which is embedded deeply in the black experience. #Jazz #JazzSky

The best takedown of the fabulist Maher to date. If there is an analogue for the theory that mediocrity floats to the top of the bowl, this is it. #BillMaher #MahertheClown thehill.com/opinion/camp...

Books I would recommend to others In just 48 pages, Dewey explores the practical and pragmatic application of philosophy to human life and society. He explores the essential role of democratic values, and how they must inform our ethics and education--and our daily lives. #Books #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons, Jymie Merritt, and Blakey on drums in a perfect album of hard bop. Blakey had a eye for emerging talent that extended to the end of his life right up to the excellent "Live of Kimball's." Ecstatic and driven. #Jazz #JazzSky

Books I would recommend to others The judge is Oliver Wendell Holmes, the dissent is Schenk, the subject is free speech: "we should be eternally vigilant against attempts to check the expression of opinions that we loathe and believe to be fraught with death.” #Books #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month The trio of Evans, LaFaro and Motion established a new sound, their interplay pushing the music in equal measure. LaFaro would die tragically after this album. Here is peak trio, like listening to colors through a cut crystal glass. #Jazz #JazzSky

Books I would recommend to others The definitive indictment of totalitarian repression, this volume was among the books that created the first cracks in the Soviet wall of lies and self-delusion which triggered its fall. Compelling, tragic, truth distilled—and relevant. #Books #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month Another album among my favorites from the earthy contralto of Cassandra Wilson. This time, steeped in the blues, she uses her unique instrument to mine every nuance of a song. “You Gotta Move” transports the listener to another time and place. #Jazz #JazzSky

Maher has always been a prevaricating chameleon. But his response to “I don’t even know you” when mildly criticized on his panel is pure Trump. So he gets grifted by a grifter and tyrant. As long as he’s nice to Bill, it’s all that matters. Birds of a feather, etc. His shtick is worn out. #BillMaher

National Jazz Appreciation Month A master of the tenor sax and giant of modern jazz. Most gravitate to the masterpiece “Inner Urge,” but all of the ‘60s Blue Notes are of a high level of excellence that few achieve once. ‘A Shade of Jade’ sets the standard. #Jazz #JazzSky

Books I would recommend to others “…power invariably come to terms with those who live within the truth by persistently ascribing…to them – a lust for power or fame or wealth – and thus they try, at least, to implicate them in their own world, the world of general demoralization.” #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month Endea Owens, a protege of Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whitaker, and Ron Carter has already proven her artistry and chops as session player, bandmate, and fronting her own. Here she stretches across jazz fusion pathways. Her philanthropy is also heralded. #Jazz #JazzSky

Books I would recommend to others If you think you know the Constitution and its amendments, read it again. Then read Paine’s Common Sense, the Declaration, the Federalist Papers, McIlwai’s Constitutionalism, and Holmes’ Common Law. No king, no unitary executive, and no tyrants. #BookSky

Books that I would recommend to others. Lorraine Hansberry compiled photographs of the Civil Rights movement with the cooperation and assistance of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1964. An essential historical document relevant to today’s events. #BookSky

National Jazz Appreciation Month One of the most productive collaborations in modern music was that between Miles Davis and Gil Evans. Here they define Third Wave jazz, taking the music into new heights that transcends genre, leading us to the epitome of great music. #Jazz #JazzSky

Yesterday in Orlando’s Hands Off protest rally. #HandsOff

National Jazz Appreciation Month It is hard to believe that the two greats didn’t perform together until this session in 1962. The result is transcendent, with the Duke performing with an all-star line-up from his big band, and Hawkins at the height of his powerful talent. #Jazz #JazzSky

Happening today here and around the country. www.mobilize.us/handsoff/eve...

Freedom will not come Today, this year Nor ever Through compromise and fear. I have as much right As the other fellow has To stand On my two feet And own the land. I tire so of hearing people say, Let things take their course. Tomorrow is another day….

No Rack can torture me— My Soul—at Liberty— Behind this mortal Bone There knits a bolder One— You cannot prick with saw— Nor pierce with Scimitar— Two Bodies—therefore be— Bind One—The Other fly— The Eagle of his Nest No easier divest— And gain the Sky Than mayest Thou—

National Jazz Appreciation Month Not just a paean to jazz, but of all black and roots music. Glasper found the key to the doorway of where the music needed to go, seamlessly combining bop, modal, free, vocal, R&B, hip hop, and soul. One of the greatest pathbreaking albums ever produced.

Books that I would recommend to others. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly [...] #BookSky

Books that I would recommend to others. A few years ago I penned a post discussion to Eric Alterman contra Larry Summers’ assertion about the inherent inferiority of women in certain academic disciplines. This book still cuts against such prejudices. Effective and undeniable. #BookSky

Senator Booker is a profile in courage.

www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/u... I feel a need to say that while antisemitism is abhorrent, it is not a crime. One cannot commit speech or thought crime. We can condemn such speech, but hurting feelings isn’t a crime. This is the same criteria used to ban books, war on equality, and on civil rights.

Thinking Jazz. Carla Bley’s music continues to speak to us through its inventiveness and playfulness. She stands as one of the greatest jazz composers of her generation. “Reactionary Tango” from this album is both a harmonic and melodic masterpiece. #JazzSky #MusicSky

Books that I would recommend to others. Resilience in the face of unforgivingly harsh life is the theme of this book, too close, perhaps to reality to some. But I return often in my mind to the residents of Killick-Claw Newfoundland and the newspaper people of the Gammy Bird. Redemptive. #BookSky

Thinking Jazz. For me, this is the album that defined Nina Simone. Many critics saw her transformation into civil rights activism as compromising her musical and jazz chops. But one cannot help to be taken up into the music; its power and protest firmly ensconced in the blues. #JazzSky #MusicSky
