I think the utility of VRR depends a lot on the game and its tendency to drop frames. I do think it's a bit more important on a device like the Switch 2 though which is less likely to run at a super stable performance level in third party software than PS5/XSX.

Obviously that's what Sony did, I don't know if it would be possible in this case. Presumably they wouldn't have left the door open/suggested it in the first place if no form of docked VRR support was possible.

Yes but only at 1440p output or below.

Looks like the Switch 2 VRR saga has been resolved for now - no docked VRR, at least at launch.

Update: the text is gone from the European Nintendo websites as well. Hard to think this is an error/coincidence.

No it would be fine. Switch 1 FWIW did not allow you to output games without vsync, so it's not likely that you would ever see screen tearing on Switch 2 even without VRR.

Important clarification: European sites appear to still have VRR as a supported display out feature, though it's possible they are in the process of removing the text across all regions. Right now the Canadian, American, and Japanese sites do not mention VRR support docked.

If this change was made for a reason, presumably VRR support will not be available for launch. Perhaps they've run into some issue with the Realtek DisplayPort to HDMI converter in the dock. In any case, hopefully support can be added in the future.

I make all those caveats in this video youtu.be/dXVdHpGy5II?...
It’s probably not eating up a lot of additional GPU time but who knows I suppose. The scaling on res/frame rate from PS4 to PS5 is pretty normal for a cross gen game, and in most shots, the two versions are more or less identical.

Friend let’s not get lost in theoretical spec comparisons and compare actual software really running on the device, which almost universally comes in at PS4 spec. That’s not a bad thing - it’s a perfectly competitive spec for a hybrid.

Saying the Switch 2 would come in at roughly PS4 levels of raster capability was not so controversial pre-launch, but people seem overly attached now. Every piece of evidence - from PC sims, to game footage, to die size - indicates a system that falls well short of any current-gen console platform.

I’m not saying they are the same, just that Switch 2 at 1080p30 with lighting tweaks is more similar to PS4 at 1080p30 without said tweaks than PS5 at 1512p60 or 4K30. The Intergrade changes are very obvious in the opening cutscene and volumetrics-heavy areas, but not so much typically.

PS4 is probably going to persist as a comparison point because Switch 2 seems to hover around PS4 specs in many titles. I'm sure current-gen consoles will often be part of the comparisons as well though.

There are games where it’s a little clearer - KCD 2 and the TLOU games I find are the best examples.

Oh thanks! I use a Lumix S5 with the Lumix F1.8 35mm lens using an Elgato Cam Link 4K and some cheap lights. I've recently moved so I am experimenting a bit with my setup in a new smaller space at the moment, I am trying to make something that looks pleasing on camera.
