Nicolle Wallace: "A lot of media outlets seem hellbent on winning over [the MAGA] market, even though it seems to me that it's a fool's errand." www.status.news/p/nicolle-wa...

If you care about journalism surviving & thriving, consider supporting it. It costs us real money and resources to produce original journalism like this, giving the inside scoop on the biggest media stories. It’s not free. Which is why we have a paywall. Our business would cease to exist otherwise.

If you want journalism that aligns with your values and ethics to succeed, find a way to support it! Consuming the work at no cost and moving on doesn't do that.

There is no one in this world that would love to give away all our content away at no cost. Unfortunately, that's not how business works. And we are trying to build a sustainable business so we can continue producing high-quality journalism and growing.

We don’t put everything behind a paywall. We don’t clutter our website with junk ads. On the free articles, we simply ask for your email so we can build a direct relationship with you. We think it is a fair trade. It helps us grow, and it keeps some stuff free for everyone.

"I just want to see if I like the content before registering," they say. But that's not how most businesses work. Imagine walking into a restaurant and asking to be served a meal before you decide whether you want to pay for it. That would never fly. Yet, somehow, that’s the expectation for media.

And I don't disagree that for a while, a lot of high-quality information from news outlets was put online at no cost. Unfortunately, that conditioned many into believing news should be free. Now the entire industry is under significant financial strain, paying for that poor decision making.

I would just suggest that what you are asking for is not how most businesses are run. You wouldn't go into a restaurant and ask to be fed, then decide whether to pay for the meal. You wouldn't go to the theater and ask to see 30 min of a film, then decide whether you want to pay for it. Etc.

Would you rather we put this article behind the paywall? Producing quality journalism costs real money. We think asking you to share your email—instead of charging for access to this story—is a fair trade. It helps us grow, and it keeps articles like this free for everyone.

on the other hand, if you give away your product for free, there is no real reason for people to pay for it!

Suffice to say, but we cannot do this reporting without readers! Status is not backed by a billionaire or corporation. It is backed by subscribers—and independent journalism only works when readers support it. If you have not yet subscribed, please consider doing so for $2/week: status.news/upgrade
