When a cabinet member announces "We are using the military to liberate an American city from its elected leaders," where do you go from there. What is left to say. The idea of that being anything short of a near-universal "Wait, what the fuck is going on" moment proves how far we've backslid.

That is the language of a coup. Not a democracy.

This is insane. I’m trying to think what the reaction would have been if Mayorkas, DHS Secretary under Biden, had got his security folks to manhandle and shove Tom Cotton or Ted Cruz in this way.

"There have been more than 30 incidents of police violence against journalists as of Tuesday, including 20 injuries, at least five of which required emergency room or urgent care visits..."

me: in cheers frasier said his dad was dead but then when sam visited him in seattle he had to explain that he was lying because their relationship was strained but to me the weirder thing is he never mentioned niles to anyone at cheers the federal soldier being unlawfully quartered in my home: ok

this speaks a bit to my argument about leaving twitter. it's not about ideological purity, it is about the fact that it's been turned into a political weapon for people who wish to use it to harm others. it's not the marketplace of ideas - you do not have to participate in this project! very simple!

NYT reporting that the White House is pushing for an aggressive mid-decade Texas redistricting to target Democratic-held seats. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/09/u...

Dozens of journalists were assaulted by law enforcement in Los Angeles this weekend. The press were just doing their job -- a sacred one explicitly protected by law. Press rights orgs will follow up collectively tomorrow. Tonight, I emailed evidence to local/state/federal officials. My sign off:

Polite request to please credit the photographers whose L.A. photos you’re sharing. They’re out there risking getting their shins exploded by police munitions to get those shots.

has the award show always involved one outfit for the red carpet, one for presenting during the show, a separate one for the performance, and another one for the afterparty? or is that a modern thing

Across the government, the Trump administration is scrambling to rehire many federal employees dismissed under DOGE’s staff-slashing initiatives after wiping out entire offices, in some cases imperiling key services such as weather forecasting and the drug approval process.

Ok. Then let it die. Because theft is theft. And even worse if you’re profiting from the crime.

the sound I just made

My brother and I have been looking for our next watch, but it needs to be something neither of us have seen. Before The Last of Us, it was Severance. Can you jump into Rehearsal Season 2 without ever having watched the first one?

Scoop: Texas police used Flock's license plate cameras to search *nationwide* for a woman who had a self-managed abortion. Claim it was "about her safety" www.404media.co/a-texas-cop-...

New from 404 Media: a cop in Texas performed a nationwide search of license plate reading cameras for a woman who got an abortion, according to multiple sets of data we've reviewed. Included cameras where abortion is legal, like Washington and Illinois www.404media.co/a-texas-cop-...

British prosecutors have approved 21 charges against self styled misogynist influencers, brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate, including rape, assault, and human trafficking.

Not an unexpected take from this portion of the internet, but still actually quite painful. Just so we’re all clear, talking openly about sexual assault is a humiliating experience, even when many people have been kind. www.thefp.com/p/blm-star-j...

SCOOP— FEMA essential functions are at "high risk" of not functioning properly just days before hurricane season because of staffing shortages, per a recent internal memo obtained by The Handbasket. These deficiencies "may disrupt life-saving and life-sustaining program delivery." Full story here:

During the rollout of the COVID vaccines, the lack of testing - combined with a raft of misinformation - led many pregnant women to not get vaccinated. @propublica.org wrote this in 2022, but it's just as relevant now with RFK Jr's CDC changing recommendations for the vaccine.

Congestion tolling is helping pay for accessibility upgrades that are long overdue in the NYC subway, so this is a disability win.

So a respected journalist warned the nation that the Trump administration is a threat to free speech and, true to form, its state media outlet warns that there will now surely be retribution by the administration against that same journalist and his network for his act of free speech.

Meticulously researched, absolutely damning. And I hope to heaven he doesn’t try to convert this into a “but I wasn’t sober yet” story.

This is a really meticulous and brutal piece, and anyone who has worked in an industry where superstars harbor power over your future recognizes this behavior. By the end of it, I was so depressed.

my two cents as someone who ran social accounts for 15 years: that's like 50 percent of the job. that's what you signed up for. someone once threatened to kill me because they got three chicken nuggets in their four piece at wendy's. grow up

hey so what does one do about bees

This is some really good reporting on some really rough shit. www.cjr.org/feature-2/we...

“I have far more at stake to lose than any other source in this piece” -- Wesley Lowery. If those were the last words he ever gets published this side of a newsletter, they are fitting. www.cjr.org/feature-2/we...

One thing that’s striking to be about this (excellent) account is that Lowery was confronted privately about how his conduct made his victims feel MULTIPLE times and did not commit to changing his behavior until he started to see professional consequences

Something not noted in the CJR piece is that Olivia often reported on the very worst cases of sexual assault for **several years** at the Daily Beast, including brutal details of mass rapes, cases inside schools and prisons, as well as many lawsuits. I am beyond furious.

This was hard to read. Wes was a friend. He supported my career trajectory. He was the moderator at my book launch. But this is devastating. His kindness toward me doesn't negate the harm he did to these women. These are serious allegations and I feel terrible for them.
