The irony is that in an age of jet fighters and guided missiles and tanks, inculcating a culture of abusive violence is actually damaging and counter-productive to mlitary effectiveness, but it persists anyway because these ideas are very difficult to kill once they've permeated everyone's brains.

Nothing is more alienating from protest-- and ultimately movement itself-- than a stranger assuming they are in a position to make you feel guilty about doing something you are not able to do safely (or safely for your family).

I can well understand wanting to out-group horrible people who you would otherwise identify with. Nobody wants that stank on them, after all. But the whole underlying concept that the in-group are automatically virtuous is one of the most toxic and destructive ideas that humans ever came up with.
