As this article spells out, one tiny problem with "it's the wokeness!" is how Democrats crushed it when they were at their most woke. This was all in 2020 before the election. Then in 2024 they backed away from it and lost to a bunch of the same people they beat in 2020.

I am absolutely going to be white-knuckling it until the baseball season starts. I don't expect it to fix anything in the world or in me, but it'll at least get the ratio between Nasty Slider Videos and pictures of RFK Jr's awful hot dog meat face on my timeline back in order somewhat.

Philadelphia Enjoys Quiet Week Of Super Bowl Victory Reflection

Watched my first episodes of Ru Paul's Drag Race last night and I'm hooked. The chaos, the puns, the music stings every time somebody talks shit from way across the room while they're putting makeup on. 100% gold

My latest. As journalists and writers, we have a duty to use language that is accurate and describes our current reality. I’m no longer going to talk about DEI/Anti-DEI. Let’s be clear. We are facing racial purges and re-segregation. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

cannot be said enough that for a decade a critical number of americans have simply refused to accept that he means what he says

I still can't get over how complex these tiny little guys can be. And they can FLY!! Amazing!!!

0; spiders are physically incapable of closing their eyes. The entire outer surface of the eye is part of the rigid exoskeleton. If they want to stop looking at something, their choices are: (a) turn their whole body away (b) cover their eyes with their pedipalps ("arms") or legs

i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

If the FAA director got fired over a business beef AND there was an air traffic controller hiring freeze despite huge shortages AND a chaotic blitz to hollow out federal bureaucracy, and then within a week the first American airliner crashes in 16 years, you would be insane not to talk about it all.

editing this Q&A about just how many animals eat poop was the some of the most fun I've had all week defector.com/normalize-ea...

www.theverge.com/news/603113/... "Musk’s efforts to get Whitaker were well known even before Trump’s victory in November. He has complained many times about the FAA, lashing out in September after the agency levied a $633,000 fine for launching missions with unapproved changes." Oligarchy is bad!?

(cw suicide) i probably think about this image set more than anything else i saw on tumblr a decade ago. That's Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy btw.

🚨 BREAKING: OMB has just issued a memo *rescinding* the previous memo freezing all federal financial assistance programs. Full text, per government source:

As nice as bluesky has been for me, I'm not sure it's something that's good to have on my phone. Anybody else finding themselves reconsidering what their phone is *for* lately?

I'm close to tearing my hair out every time I see an article asking "can he do that?" or "is this legal?" about some thing he's doing. HE'S A CONVICTED CRIMINAL. HE DOESN'T CARE. HE HAS NEVER KNOWN A CONSEQUENCE FOR HIS ACTIONS. WE'RE ALREADY OFF THE RAILS.

I would guess that 75% of the graduate students in my department are funded entirely by federal grants. Virtually all of the postdoctoral researchers, too. If a funding pause were to come, it would be catastrophic for them (and there is no clear path to finding alternate employment quickly)

Big Companies in 2020: "We are committed to learning & growing. Here is our plan to support diversity and inclusion in our company." The same big companies in January of 2025: "WHEW! GLAD THAT'S OVER!" *Tosses diversity plan and staff out*

Nah. They heard the same rhetoric the rest of us did and decided cheaper eggs were more important than human rights. They decided they were fine with ICE raids and erasing trans people from existence. Fuck 'em.

I'm just going to keep pointing out these small* moments of collective action until it starts to click with folks that if we stand together we have all of the power. *this is actually a huge fricken deal, and it only took a couple clicks from a bunch of folks who collectively said No Fucking Nazis.

The old rules are for losers:

Here's the conclusion of Bishop Mariann Budde's sermon at the National Cathedral the day after Trump's inauguration. This gentle, pointed plea apparently *made him angry.* 🤦

Let's not look at the fact that LA county has a population larger than most states but does not have the voting power of any of those states. The current voting system means rural votes count more than votes from city votes. That's not equality of any kind.

A reminder that Los Angeles had its hottest summer in history last year. Southern California has received just 2% of "normal" rainfall during the current "rainy" season. These fires are a direct result of a warming & drying atmosphere caused by burning fossil fuels. We are in a climate emergency.

we're thrilled to share that we've started the year with a new addition to our team! he's extremely smart, capable, charming, persuasive, and boasts a wealth of museum experience

Remember: It is critically important that we continue to ask whether children are being rushed into hormones and surgery despite years of data demonstrating that they are not.

one major improvement i've seen in the world over the course of my lifetime is the emergence of lightly-salted sweets. i just swung by a bakery to pick up a chocolate chip cookie and it had the slightest flaking of kosher salt on it. that shit went crazy. i think we're doing great in that department

Hello from the jumping spider we found lurking on the star atop our real Christmas tree. The benefits of getting a real tree. °oo°

My Doctor Emailed Me Back This is the story of how the NHS tried to make me the face of their “new system” for trans health, and why I told them to shove it Exclusively on TransWrites

Being in the office on Christmas Eve Eve feels a bit like being at school after the end of the day. Mostly empty, hallway lights mostly off, just a couple people sitting at their computers in scattered offices

What's your favorite taboo bite of food that you get when you're cooking alone in the kitchen, I e. raw cookie dough? A favorite of mine: sipping on a small cup of pot roast gravy I skimmed off the top of the pot, with all the fat and bits and drippings that I will remove before serving later

Have yourself a merry little Carboniferous. #Art #SciArt #PaleoArt #Inverts

Breaking with tradition for a wee wasp Wednesday

Went 12 hours with no internet, on purpose, last night/this morning. Realizing that being connected at all times is making it impossible for me to focus on any one thing. That kind of split attention is sort of necessary for the work I do, but has really been hurting my wellbeing at home

The best animated movies of 2024

The 39th time we've had to post this, and this time about The Onion's original hometown.

Amazing to see this in person at the Barnes Foundation in Philly last weekend. It's different when you can see every individual brushstroke
