It's published! The largest research work I've ever undertaken: Lords of the flies: dipteran migrants are diverse, abundant & ecologically important Published in Biological Reviews: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... Thanks so much to co-authors @koralwotton.bsky.social & Myles Menz 1/x

The latest issue of @nature.com features my photo/interview with JuanRa Fernandez, an "urban herpetologist" working in one of the world's most visited monumental complexes, the Alhambra in Granada. nature.com/articles/d41... @fcienciasugr.bsky.social

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

!! Such an exciting email to wake up to. Our review all about the migration of flies has been accepted in Biological Reviews! The wonders of fly migration are unending and I have been so excited for so long to share this paper with you. Hopefully not too much longer now!

A call to arms for eBirders and iNaturalists. 🚨 We want your bird photos! If you photograph feeding birds with flowers, fruit, seeds or prey, upload the image with locality details. We are data-harvesting species, size and type of food/prey to study foodwebs and species interactions. Thanks! 🧪🌐🪶

It's all too easy to get drawn into doomscrolling, such is the slew of negativity on social media. We prefer #bloomscrolling, seeing the wildflowers shared online by our friends. To add to the positivity, we're starting our #OrchidsOfRhodes countdown with the mighty Ophrys colossaea.

I'm a big believer in and enthusiatic contributor to citizen science platforms. But in a world where data is leveraged for profit and AI is taking away jobs, maybe this is an idea whose time has come?

This is Macrocillix maia & he's a moth who mimics bird poo. But he's taken it to the next level, he's also mimicking flies feeding on the bird poo, right down to the shimmer of their wings! I have wanted to see one for so long, but never thought I would! In Trus Madi entomology camp in Borneo. 1/2

My first paper as a member of the Manthey lab is out in Biology Letters! We used whole genome data from a classic "great speciator" (the Solomon Island White-eyes) to explore the relationship between island size and genetic diversity. doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...

Our new paper in @journal-evo.bsky.social on acoustic divergence in one of the most enigmatic bird radiations is out @ebdonana.bsky.social doi.org/10.1093/evol...

Now this is exciting. Antonin and his team have just published a study showing that the number of migrating hoverflies through Czechia are positively correlated with the numbers of birds! Suggests that the birds are using the flies as fuel on migration. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/epdf/10....

The war on nature, based on invented facts is now a culture Wars format being used for political gain everywhere. People on the centre right should look at where those tactics have led the US and take a step back. We need both nature and facts. All of us. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

Our Fabulous Fuerteventura tour went in search of convergent evolution today, and found it - despite appearances, these aren't cacti! Euphorbia canariensis and the much rarer Euphorbia handiensis have evolved to deal with the same environmental issues as cacti, coming up with the same solutions.

Will have to look for this on Linosa as well

How better to start the weekend than with some colourful, unabashed joy? Here's just a small selection of the Ophrys bee #orchids we'll be sharing with our guests on our popular Orchids of Rhodes tour in just a few weeks time.

1. A few years ago, people like me were widely attacked in the media for “declinism”. How could we fail to see that we were heading into a capitalist utopia, in which everything would keep getting better? This is a thread about what we could see that our critics could not. 🧵

Lesser White-fronted Geese field painting. The flock of of 24 birds from the Swedish reintroduction scheme have been a real delight. First time I've seen and heard a flock of this attractive species in a wild setting

Harsher Amazonian dry seasons caused by climate change are linked to declining bird survival in 'pristine' Amazonia. Happy that NBC Conservation Awards Programme modestly financed some of the very early stages of this work. doi.org/10.1126/scia... #ornithology

That Painted x Indigo Bunting hybrid is wild!

Been staring at global bird taxonomy again, and every time I do, I'm reminded of just how damn much we've already lost. Must have been a good day birding: ebird.org/checklist/S2...

Singing Wallcreeper on my morning walk. Seems fitting for a first post.
