they're generated subs so there wasnt much intentionality going i to them in the first place—though with my barely rudimentary understanding of french id say that they're pretty decent generated subs

from the first reddit thread i clicked on:
"ami" would be a word that translates only to friend
"un copain" is a friend and "mon copain" is a boyfriend, but sometimes "mon ami" is used for boyfriend too
"petit ami/copain" is without a doubt a boyfriend
