Yet again we are seeing "unprecedented" marine heatwaves in 2025. buff.ly/mnEcYcV What will we see in 2025 & beyond? @dansmale1.bsky.social comments, “If this continues through the summer we would expect to see widespread biological impacts. This is a significant warming event." buff.ly/U6iBTBN

£274M. This they proudly present, at the same time they are making 38 people compulsory redundant…. To save £3.8M www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I got hit by some rather sudden and extreme financial hardship so if anyone is in need of remote wetlab contract research, strictly BSL1, do let me know. Currently scrambling for gigs. Plant, Bacterial, Archaeal Non-model Bioeng Custom Lab Hardware Turn Key Genetic Design Please repost for reach 💚

Brew yourself a cup of chamomile tea and don't forget to observe the chamomile pollen with your Foldscope! 🫖 🔬

How do animals move in perfect sync without a leader? In the latest Science Sessions episode, we explore how individual decisions shape collective behavior in ants, birds, fish, and more. Listen now: www.pnas.org/post/podcast...

One more working day before we go on strike. Our jobs matter. Our colleagues matter. It seems as though this has been forgotten. Time to send a reminder.

I'm so very much looking forward to learning more about this algae my mom's been growing in her orchid cup. There is something so satisfying in the immediacy and convenience of exploring the living world from within your home. Unknown life forms are all around us! 🔎🦠🔬

Got a #FoldScope microscope kit for s friend's son. Of course couldn't resist getting one for myself too! Here's an image of a fern rhizome cellular matrix (the fixed slide that comes with the kit). Look forward to hunting for protists in the field #microalgae #MicrobialEcology

University of Derby faces mass job cuts as management plans to make half of senior academics redundant. Please spread the word. www.ucu.org.uk/article/1398...

You counted, you waited, and now...the #BigGardenBirdwatch results are officially in! 📣 But who has claimed the number one spot for 2025? For the full analysis, head here: brnw.ch/21wRR4d

🚀 The Frey Group is now on Bluesky! 🌐 We explore statistical physics, biophysics, and nonequilibrium systems. From active matter to self-organization in biology, we uncover fundamental principles of complex systems. #Physics #Biophysics #ActiveMatter #ComplexSystems #TheoreticalPhysics

Fully-funded PhD position at @poldresden.bsky.social in Dresden, Germany, to theoretically study sarcomere self-assembly in muscle cells, in collaboration with the experimental group of Frank Schnorrer @frankschnorrer.bsky.social More information here: physics-of-life.tu-dresden.de/friedrich

A gorgeous spring day in Madison, WI. State Street was jam-packed for some reasons. #HandsOff2025

Our members voted for 21 further days of action. You can see how determined and angry we are. We are very much aware of the issues in HE, we are not suggesting to ignore those, in fact we've been highlighting the issues with the funding of HE for ...

This is cool. The Guardian recreated a searchable climate future risk tool (wildfire, extreme heat, drought, hurricane, and coastal flood) for the US that was developed by FEMA but deleted by the Trump administration’s ‘climate’ purge.

New YouTube channel for our Making Connections Seminars: www.youtube.com/@MakingConne..., which focus on modelling the brain & other bio. systems as networks. Joint initiative between @psychiatry-ucam.bsky.social and @kings-bmeis.bsky.social, co-led by me & Prof. Petra Vértes

Tuesday we’ll be out again. People keep telling us how angry and upset they are, how they don’t understand that there is ZERO movement, and wonder how much management even care. People are done, students are done, management need to stop these damaging cuts NOW.

Fantastic opportunity!

A thread that is a fantastic resource of upcoming UK science festivals

It may feel as though we live in dark times, but here in the UK there are LOADS of science festivals celebrating ideas, sparking curiosity & sharing the latest research (for both adults & kids). Someone told me recently they didn’t know where to look, so I made a list. Here goes… [deep breath]: 1/8

"If science is to honour one of its core values — a commitment to the truth wherever it might lead — scientists must stand up for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in science." -- Arthur Caplan Don't wait out four hard years: speak truth to power NOW www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪

I love this, from Elif Shafak, & it's what I need to hear at the moment: "When times are confusing, everybody is a little lost. No-one is as inwardly confident as they present themselves to be. Hence the reason we must read, my boy. Books. like paper lanterns, provide us with a light amidst the fog"

#blueskyalgae does anyone know if there exists a marine species of Volvox? Many freshwater species have marine correspondents, but I can't find a marine Volvox. If it doesn't exist, why might it not have evolved?

Phd opening in our lab! We are looking for a PhD student to work on simulation of active micr/nano robots. Dradline for apllication 4th of april. This is a fully funded three-years position and it is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network @dn-greens.bsky.social

New pub! We studied how different #diatom species move combining experiments + simulations! We show how the morphology of the diatom affects its movement patterns that may contribute to niche segregation in a biofilm. Plus, we did the first 3D tracking of their motion (using a healing crystal😂).

Delighted to see our work on #diatom motility published in @pnas.org !🎉 doi.org/10.1073/pnas... These abundant single-celled algae are responsible for a significant portion of the air we breathe yet often overlooked. Here we show how how diatom (raphe) shape impacts their gliding function... 1/3

What to do with plastic waste? Recycling? Biodegradation? Biotransforming it into something valuable? Sinking it in the oceans to avoid CO2 release? Glad to be part lf the conversation 👉🏻 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

New paper this week from the Plant Metabolism group: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... @alisonsmith25.bsky.social @kittyclouston.bsky.social @andreholzer.bsky.social

We have an open postdoc position in our group! We seek motivated and fun people with a background in theoretical biological physics to work on projects revolving around pattern formation, cell biology, and particularly #condensates. Details: www.ds.mpg.de/4078435/job_... #TheoBiophysicsPosition

I'll be there. Details to come...

Oxygen gradients shape E. coli motility patterns as they run away from O2! - 😍

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

Hi Bluesky, my name is Otti and I am a biophysicist working on the theoretical and experimental biophysics of swimming microbes and microbial interactions. My research is inspired by applications to sustainability and environmental science. #Biophysics #MathBio #Microswimmers #ActiveMatter

Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress
