Compare Abramovich's case to Oleg Tinkov's (the individual, not the eponymous bank). If Abramovich behaved the same way, I would be with you that the due process takes the precedence and the core issue here.

The Russia Sanctions regime is part of the UK law. My thesis is that Abramovich is exploiting it and the broader UK legal framework to his advantage and (a) the UK Govt could push back better on that (b) that is not adequately recognised in the public discourse, including this very discussion.

100% with you on this and the previ post. But the OP had the undertones of "is this really a fair thing to do to a legitimate businessman"? I am obviously biased but bringing up human rights as a relevant question in this situation is like debating the merits of pacifism with a frontline soldier.

No such thing would be possible today or even 10 years after the event. If the couple maintained that account open, I imagine the bank at some point had to refresh KYC/AML checks on them. By the logic of your argument, it should never had attained a right to do so, it would be fundamentally unfair.

In n 1994 my mom as a translator accompanied a wealthy Ukrainian couple on a trip from Worthing to London with a specific purpose of them opening a current bank account in the UK. The couple were just visiting the country on a tourist visa. The account was opened without a hitch.

You can unpick every piece of that narrative: how he got the EU citizenship, that his legal troubles in the UK predate the Russia-related sanctions, his activities as go-between since the start of the full-scale invasion, and even the statement about Ukr charity donation.

The important missing context is that depicting A as just a wealthy private citizen, maybe with a bit hairy Russian past at best, is a contorsion.

they were not unfrozen in a true sense - that would only happen once sanctions over A are lifted. Not talking only about this one BBC story, which is indeed quite high level and superficial. either it make it look like BBC or you believing the problem lies with a lack of action on the UK govt part.

key word here is *potential*. Same way it would not be a human rights abuse case for eminent domain other examples of confiscation. As to this case specifically, not sure why you are referring to the asset freeze in a past tense.

Are you suggesting that Abramovich is a mere wealthy private sitizen and seizure of assets linked to him is a potential human rights abuse case?

He does, it just the procedural stuff about that specific agreement

Well, he would not be the signatory anyway. I think it would be Ministry of Finance and Min of Foreign Affairs. Abd they of course can always authorise someone else to sign.

Це буде literally getting something for nothing.
