No worries then. You've voiced your opinion in a couple of replies, I've voiced mine. We just don't agree as to whether or not he's truly broken ranks and that's fine. Let's just agree to not be on the same page entirely.

Thanks! That's helpful and I'm sure we are! I'm just worried that all the qualifications and language surrounding that are reducing the impact of that, you know. Do you care to hear a couple of the spots that irritate me? If not, that's perfectly fine.

I didn't mean to be condescending at all, I was just wondering whether you've read it. I don't know how I should've asked that differently. I did not mean to talk down to you - or anybody else - at all. I was just curious to hear how you'd arrived at your conclusion given how the text is phrased.

That's a pitfal of the platform, for sure. :) And don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy he's pivoting in this direction for once. But his piece is full of difficult passages and doesn't state clearly that he wants people to take the vaccine. It makes me worry that it's often sold as pro-science.
comment in response to post
That's not my view at all. I just find it problematic to sell that piece as more than it is. Especially with headlines claiming he "recommends the vaccine" or "changed his mind". That's just not accurate and gives him more credit than the piece deserves.

Imagine he turns around and says something outrageously anti-science again and the last thing people read all over the place was "Oh well, he's changed and trusts science now." It'll legitimize his next nonsensical take. It's not black and whit with him ever.

Did you read the Fox piece? He doesn't state it as clearly as that & he doesn't urge people to get vacc'ed. He's dogwhistling the whole way, minimising the dangers and he's always been inconsistent. I find it problematic to present *that* as a clear change of mind and as being convinced by science.

If read through an anti-vaxxer lens, one can easily leave with the impression that everyhting's fine if you don't vaccinate. The last sentence is such an insult: "Under my leadership, HHS is and will always be committed to radical transparency to regain the public’s trust in its health agencies."
comment in response to post
But he's got so much anti-vaxxer language in. He literally stresses that sanitiation & nutrition reduced cases massively before the vaccine was even invented, speaks deaths "with, or of" measles, hails supplements & stresses again and again how much of a personal choice it is to have kid vaccinated.

Very recently Dimitrij Kapitelman's latest novel "Russische Spezialitäten". His use of and thoughts about langauge are brilliant. And he's able to navigate the tension between hope and hopelessness so, so well. Can't recommend that enough.

Same same in German langauge media. It's unfathomable.

comment in response to post

Schad eigentlich, Quati! :D
