interesting how rapidly academic freedom and free speech disappeared from the conversation after dominating it for years and years www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Even though Trump backed off on some of the tariffs – seeing that it would lead us to economic calamity – the ones that are still in place will cost the average American family $4,700/year. What a ridiculous and cruel policy.

Before folks overreact to headlines about the judge’s ruling in the Khalil case, please note that (1) it was an immigration judge (IJ), not a federal district court; and (2) the IJ had no power to consider Khalil’s constitutional objections. This particular decision was a fait accompli.

NEW from judge in Maryland immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia's case: "For the reasons discussed during today’s status conference, the Court finds that the [Trump admin] have failed to comply with this Court’s Order..." Next hearing: Tuesday, April 15 at 4 pm storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

“He offered a dirty ashtray’s view of the future, with migrant fear-mongering, transphobic attacks, and outright threats against his enemies.”

Anna, who is a must-follow for coverage of legal developments, is covering the government’s pathetic display at the Abrego Garcia hearing.

He looks like this

Upshot of today's hearing: the DOJ went in front of the judge and said, in essence, "I've got nothing for you and I don't think we can give you anything until next Tuesday." Judge's response: You're going to give me daily updates starting tomorrow.

You might have noticed that basically every link that you see to a court filing is at courtlistener.com. Ever wondered why? Court Listener is a tiny non-profit with a staff of four and a four-person board, plus some dedicated volunteers. They receive no government funding. free.law/team/

I hope there's a law firm willing to sue the absolute shit out of everyone who had a part in this.

Lawlessness and shamelessness.

The right thing to do would have been to deny the application before the deadline, as the liberal justices say they would have done.

No, the President actually does not decide how tax dollars are spent. Congress does. It would be good if we had an Attorney General who focused on understanding the law rather than groveling and reciting lies to score points with the President. What an embarrassing spectacle.

This is 100% nonsense

What do you call it when there's a branch of the security state that views its job as quarantining the spread of unwelcome ideas?

We are still in the middle of the biggest trade war in a century and the biggest tax increase in decades, despite the partial “pause” of even higher tariffs that did not exist a couple weeks ago.

Buried within one of Trump’s executive orders was a shady pull back on notice-and-comment rulemaking. Essentially: the public would not be given the opportunity to comment on new rules, thereby helping the president fast-track any deregulation in the future.

Trump approaches the presidency like a man who has done a *heroic* amount of cocaine.

"Even under the most tyrannical monarchs, the king never asserted unilateral authority to issue bills of attainder—a power the president now asserts for himself." From Edward II to Henry VIII, the historical record here is eye-opening. ⬇️

Make it easier & then maybe it would go viral.

It's not just his delusion that tariffs will bring manufacturing jobs back. It's the paranoia, and the sense that trade is somehow rigged. @saletan.bsky.social on Trump's big tariff lie:

You're following Ari, right? You should be following Ari.

"We now go live to the Rose Garden ... " www.youtube.com/watch?v=urnR...

He just testified all morning about the reasons why the tariff policy was going to make America great. Then he checked his phone and realized everything he just said was canceled on Truth Social.

“We need to get better at treating this like a business.”

Fox News kept telling its viewers that Kamala was the dumb one.

Trump's 90-day pause on his tariffs is an admission that they were bad policy to begin with. Trump is not negotiating—he's walking back a disastrous idea because markets tanked and all signs were pointing to a recession. Small businesses and consumers deserve stability, not back and forth chaos.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.: “Chaos is its own form of tariff. Who invests in a nation that can't have a set of dependable laws that people can count on?”

The entire reason you curb the exercise of arbitrary power is it prevents one asshole's mood swings from wrecking an entire country! You don't praise it when it momentarily swings in your favor

I'm going to start saying "art of the deal" every time I do something really stupid and then start backtracking

Trump is creating giant market fluctuations with his on-again, off-again tariffs. These constant gyrations in policy provide dangerous opportunities for insider trading. 🧵

Art of the deal!

Law profs, you too.

[Darkest galaxy-brained take] Y’see the aborted tariffs were *akshually* tactically BRILLIANT because now they have an extensive list of social media critics that they can round up and send to the camps.

Trump on the markets: "Up 2500 points. Nobody has ever heard of it. Gotta be a record."

Thank you to the local advocates who visited my office to emphasize the need to support Ukrainians. Putin’s illegal invasion threatens global peace and stability, and the U.S. must continue to stand with our allies against this attempted authoritarian takeover.

fake news: 10% on all islands solely populated by penguins still in force

At DOJ, we used to call these “for profit prisons” and when BOP or a state used them, those inmates were still considered to be in the custody of that prison system for relevant legal purposes. There is no reason El Salvadoran terror prison should be any different.

LIVE: Fox presenters’ souls leave their body as they’re forced to finally tell the truth about tariffs. Here, the story a small business making products for kids with special needs. Its tariff bill has gone from $26,000 to $346,000. Fatal. A fate Fox deserves for months of tariff disinformation.

I think of bringing it up. I did a whole piece all about the need to bring this up and make it absolutely central to the Dem response to the tariffs: newrepublic.com/article/1936...

It's outrageous that they gave Trump the powers trusted to them in the Constitution, even if just on an "emergency wink-wink basis" It's unconscionable that they're now proposing a way to block themselves from taking their rightful powers back.

He can't. It takes 535 oathbreaking cowards under Article I of the Constitution to allow him to do that.

The past four Republican administrations have tanked the US economy. But I know multiple Democrats who include their pronouns in the footer of their emails. I have never felt more politically homeless.
