Just submitted my largest grant proposal for funding my fieldwork. I’m really excited that I’ve been able to apply to so many places for funding. I can’t wait to get out into the field.

Researchers are inviting death metal singers into the lab to understand how they can scream, growl, and squeal without hurting their vocal tissues. What they’re finding upends conventional wisdom on vocal health. ✍️ @ohyeahitscouch.bsky.social

Exactly one month until I start my field season in Turkana, Kenya!! 🇰🇪 I’m so excited and can’t wait to be doing fieldwork again!!

Neuroscientist @leorzmigrod.bsky.social was among the first wave of scientists to start investigating the neurobiological origins of ideological thinking. Nautilus recently caught up with her to find out makes the human brain so prone to ideology. 🧪

If I ever again need to argue that rats are not universally disgusting to all people, I will note that there are people willing to pay ~$46 for a tiny canvas that a rat has "painted" by running on it with its little rat feet. "Pawcasso" someone worked HARD on that one www.bbc.com/news/article...

Nice work by Deanna Goldstein (Dept. of Neuroscience & Cell Bio, Rutgers U School of Medicine) who led the way on our new paper. It shows the utility of spherical harmonic/sliding semilandmark (SPHARM-sliding) analysis to better characterize the shape of hominoid manual phalanges & study fossils. 🧪

This made me really happy.

The Lilac-breasted Roller is always dressed for spring. This bird mates for life, with courtship rituals that include swooping, diving, and rolling through the air. Lilac-breasted Rollers are so at home in the sky that they also breed in flight! Photo: Justin Ponder, CC BY 4.0, iNaturalist

Going to be detoxing from social media/my phone/technology for a bit. Going to try to minimally use technology for a week and then expand it to a month to see how it impacts my mental health.

We reported on this a few days ago, but I want to point out this headline because this is where we are at. A bill in Arkansas would ban gender affirming HAIRCUTS for transgender youth. HAIRCUTS. This is a straight up North Korea state sanctioned hairstyle proposed law for youth.

Without adequate funding and staff, the Department of Education will be severely weakened in its ability to enforce federal civil rights laws, protect students with disabilities, and safeguard student privacy. Dismantling public education is an attack on civil rights.

This recent attack on education and students within this country is appalling. This is not the country I grew up in. After my masters, I will be searching for PhD programs internationally for I do not trust seeking a degree in the United States. I encourage everyone to look elsewhere if they can.

The mood was defiant at many of the rallies, where chants of “Scientists will not be silenced”, “Facts over fear” and “What do we want? Peer review! When do we want it? Now!” were heard. https://go.nature.com/3F8T6FX
