you *will* pay the price when you go back to being a 'simple' member of faculty. It's not a perfect system of course (with tribalism always behind the corner), but I find it - from the point of view of the survival of the institution - far superior to what we have now in the UK. /End

In continental Europe, holding a faculty or university leadership position is still considered service: you do it for a period of time and then you go back to being a member of faculty. This implies that you have very strong incentives not to misbehave when you manage others, otherwise /2
