Trump claimed the Biden administration spent $8 million "making mice transgender." The White House tried to back up this number with records of funding for research into cancer, asthma, and HIV, some of which used *transgenic* (genetically modified) mice.

As someone just shy of 50, I am decades removed from the current generation of disaffected, but I think I understand. When I didn't fit in growing up, I ended up in both nerdy and queer adjacent spaces. If I had only had the former and not the latter, I don't know what my politics would be today.

When I'm miserable, I try to make myself feel better. When I'm feeling good, I want to share that feeling. The rich are miserable. They got rich focusing on themselves and their own ambitions. Fascism is self soothing through the exercise of power over others.

I think I finally get Weimar Germany. It always confounded me that violent nationalist dictatorship should be relatively easy to identify, yet Nazi only became an epithet once war was joined against them, which is way too late. But liberal norms resist calling people out. So this is what we get.
