I wonder how much of this is because Church is one of the few people not really beholden to grant-based finding like everyone else. He has the privilege of being the innovator that gets the money to work on whatever ideas come into his head like reviving extinct animals.

Ever since undergrad I've thought that genetics and molecular biology needed something the equivalent of NASA telescope pictures. Something that a lay person could look at and understand enough to think "that's cool" and get interested in the field. Sadly the closest we get are a false bill of goods
