People use this thing like a search engine. It is currently dictating public policy.

Has there ever been a more cooked civilization?

my fear is that bluesky is becoming the msnbc of social media platforms, which is not a place i want to be

As the Canadian government pushes AI adoption at virtually any cost, this recent report out of Australia comes to mind, where public servants are wary because they’ve seen first hand the consequences of poorly considered AI rollout.

“we’re going to learn nothing from the past two decades to try to capitalize on a short-term economic opportunity that likely won’t even pan out”

poilievre continues to sink in preferred prime minister polling. you have to wonder if his leadership of the conservatives could still be in jeopardy.

If the government was looking to cancel the F-35 contract in favour of a European fighter jet, this report would provide good justification for the decision.

“Critics say that Japan’s newfound openness to hostile M&A risks ceding an indispensability to global supply chains that has been carefully built up over decades.”

now that canada is getting closer to europe and australia instead of focusing so exclusively on the US, can we copy them and guarantee workers 4-5 weeks of paid vacation?

new icons? wow, apple’s such an innovator!

It’s hard not to feel we’re just doing a bad rerun of a decade ago. In the 2010s, Japan automating elder care was a big part of the narrative that robots were taking our jobs. But right as that story was being popularized, Japan was actually pulling back because the robots weren’t working as hoped.

china supplies russia with hundreds of millions in "dual use" items that could maybe be used in weapons: the great evil is at it again! US and western countries send israel tens of billions of dollars of weapons to conduct its genocide in gaza: totally normal, just supporting an ally democracy!

It’s continually wild to me to hear Carney call out China and Russia as the great threats to Canada when the US has launched a trade war and threatened to make us a 51st state and India has literally killed a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil.

the west would never, to its detriment

We’ve been going through some of the tech ghouls turned arms dealers on @systemcrash.info bonus episodes. This time it’s Palmer Luckey and his scary vision for AI-powered war.

Registered to go to the main event of Toronto Tech Week back in April, where top Shopify people will be speaking. They finally rejected my request this morning.

can’t wait to see the numbers on how carney is doing a massive tax cut and ramping up spending while still getting the books in order

cops doing crime on camera. as @chadloder.bsky.social has been pointing out all day, this is totally illegal. cops doing crime. on camera. adjust your stupid headlines accordingly.

Chinese consumers get increasingly cheaper EVs while North Americans are virtually denied sedans, especially small ones, and prices just keep climbing. It’s hard not to feel restrictions on Chinese automakers are to protect the profits of Western automakers and ensure they don’t have to compete.

🚨 Israeli forces have reportedly boarded the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. Connection to the Madleen ship has been lost.

the climate deniers are admitting what the constant promises of carbon capture that never materialize are really about

🚨🚨🚨 Greta Thunberg Posted 3 minutes ago 'The Swedish government must protect their citizen! Greta Thunberg has been kidnapped by the Israeli military.' www.instagram.com/reel/DKqP-2Q... #GazaFreedomFlotilla #AllEyesonDeck #GazaGenocide #FreePalestine

don’t forget: waymos and other robotaxis are surveillance devices on wheels that police are increasingly tapping for footage

“I’m not going to claim CEOs are that special. It’s just somebody has to tell others . . . ‘This is where we’re going.’ And AI is not particularly good at that yet.” AI can do everyone else’s job, but CEOs are just too important to automate. How convenient!

Not at all surprised to learn that the Pentagon deliberately misled the public to make them believe advanced fighters were actually UFOs — to the degree that their own employees were subject to it. Sadly, I doubt it will make much of a dent in the renewed obsession with alien spacecrafts.

the framing of this story is a great example of how the US conception of freedom of expression is way out of line with how many other parts of the world understand it. the replies from brazilians make that clear. we need to stop allowing that US framing of speech to seep into our policy debates.

Canada Post wants to create a new class of flexible, part-time worker that will better compete with Amazon and implement “dynamic routing” so delivery routes can be changed on the fly. It’s a good example of how Amazon degrades workers’ rights even beyond its walls. Workers are right to push back.

“To simply blame state subsidies for China’s mastery of EVs is reductive. Time and again, whether it’s smartphones, solar panels, or 5G, China is combining state support with economies of scale and a fiercely competitive domestic market to command transformative technology.”

the effort to push the ndp even more to the right continues unabated. the idea the ndp lost because it wasn’t right-wing enough is foolishness.

Humanoid robots will not be delivering packages, but the PR move does make me wonder what Amazon is trying to distract people from with this story.

woohoo, annual video game ad fest

have any journalists asked mark carney or his government whether they’re going to respond to israel establishing 22 new settlements in the west bank and gotten a substantive answer?

happy to see everyone having fun with their switch 2s, but the handheld i really want is a ps vita 2

I’m back on Bubble Pop with @rachelgilmore.bsky.social to talk about the conservative politics of Mark Carney’s government and rant about the King coming to Canada. Don’t miss it!

On today’s System Crash, listeners hear the consequences of recording about ongoing news on a Wednesday when anything can happen on the Thursday before the episode gets posted on a Friday. Still a great chat with me and @bcmerchant.bsky.social though!

if Trump sells his Tesla but you only slapped a bumper sticker on yours I am going to be RUTHLESS with you
