The relationship between the US and its traditional allies has irrevocably changed. Europe and countries like Canada can accept being under the boot of the US, or make the hard choice to reclaim their sovereignty and chart a different path for tech development. www.disconnect.blog/p/jd-vance-c...

In response to Vance’s provocative speeches, Europeans have been talking a lot about military self-sufficiency, but they need to be talking much more about digital sovereignty and escape US tech domination. www.disconnect.blog/p/jd-vance-c...

Europe wants to be a player in the AI game, but Vance said it could only play a supporting role and that would only happen if it repeals tech regulations passed in recent years. He warned of relying on China, ignoring the similarities to US tech domination. www.disconnect.blog/p/jd-vance-c...

In Paris, he described AI as a great opportunity, but one the United States had to control while ensuring it aligned with his right-wing view of the world and wasn’t constrained by European regulations. He doesn’t care if AI targets minorities. www.disconnect.blog/p/jd-vance-c...

Vance’s speeches at the AI Action Summit and Munich Security Conference showed how the United States was fundamentally resetting its relationship with Europe. That prompted discussions about European defense spending, but should go far beyond that. www.disconnect.blog/p/jd-vance-c...

I wrote about the target DOGE put on California high-speed rail back in December, when it became clear Vivek Ramaswamy (remember him?) and Elon Musk were going after it. Musk has always wanted to see the project canceled, and this is an opportunity he can’t pass up.
