At the end of WW2 we established in the UN charter that all the peoples of earth have a right to self-govern and gave the powers-that-be of the time (including Russia) the responsibility to protect that principle in the formation of the Security Council. Russia is no longer living up to that ideal.

There are those who run for office to govern and others who don‘t believe in government and want to undo it from within. Guess which group is now in power inter US.

« We hold Therese truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal »…not white men, not straight men, no Christian men, not American men, not right wing men…ALL MEN!…and all women too.

DOGE did not find fraud in US social security benefits to 150-year-old recipients. The SSA computer systems are outdated and default to May 1875 when no date of death or impossible birthdays are entered. What DOGE found is poor data entry and obsolete systems due to lack of resources, not fraud.

The test of reasonableness in the implementation legislation by public officials is one of the protections against tyranny. If one is not held to reason for their actions, they can override rights, usurp institutions and degrade the rule of law. That is what is at stake in the tariffs ruling.

The tariffs ruling did not say they are illegal. It’s about the limits to the power of the President and the preeminent role of Congress on tariffs. If 🍊followed the rules and use the GOP majority in both houses to enact tariffs, he would be fine, but then he wouldn’t get to whine about the courts.

South Africa is know as one of the worst countries for violence towards women. The murder of women is described as an epidemic by the SA government. Instead of white farmers, the US should welcome women victims of violence, but that mean being kind to brown people…not likely today.

Being elected is not a « get-out-of-the-constitution-free » card.

I believe in equality of all at birth, the right of people to set rules for themselves as a society, fair sharing with all members of society of the fruits of our collective work, protection of nature and sustainable development, rule of law and due process. Somehow today that‘s controversial.

The war in Ukraine has been raging long enough and Russia has been provided sufficient opportunity to seek piece. Enough pussy-footing with Russia. It‘s time for decisive action from the West. Garrison Ukraine with western troops in non-front-line rolls, impose a no-fly zone, block all trade.

There are many peoples on this planet that suffer much worse persecution that Afrikaners and are not currently welcomed as refugees in the US. Why the special treatment?

Seeing the swearing in of Canadian cabinet ministers, I‘m struck by the qualitative difference with their US counterparts. No quacks, no conspiracy theorists, no supremacists, just qualified, competent, educated, reasonable folk taking an oath in English and French.

I agree with🍊‘s policy re drug prices. As some democrats have been asking for this for years, this would be a great opportunity for bipartisan legislation from Congress. It would have a much better chance to survive a legal challenge by the pharmaceutical industry. Bernie would support this!

The more I hear of „common sense“ in politics, the more I‘m convinced that sense is not common.

Political systems are tools, artifices we create for a purpose. When we no longer believe in the purpose, they change. That’s how the old monarchies of Europe fell, it’s how democracy is falling.

All that is necessary for human civilization to fail is for one generation not to educate the next.

Republican tariff logic: I keep buying things from the grocery store, but it doesn’t buy from me. That means I‘m subsidizing the store and they are ripping me off. To end this abuse I will stop eating till they treat me better. RIP

Causus Belli, a concept we rejected after WW2 and that Putin is trying to deal back into geopolitics, is what the war in Ukraine is really about.

Defiance of court rulings, non-compliance with the laws of Congess, arrest of judges and now arrest of a mayor. How long till the arrest of members of Congess? Destitution of Supreme Court judges? Not all coups are carried out in armed conflict. Most are gradual usurpations of institutions.

The Roman Catholic Church, the biggest old white European boys club in the world, that opposes abortion, denounces homosexuality, one of the most conservative and dogmatic body in humankind is woke and communist according to MAGA. How far right do you have to be for the RCC to be to your far left?

Russia‘s geopolitical position is replete with problems but it doesn’t justify it‘s imperialistic behaviour, no more then it’s past hegemony over other nations. Russia could have chosen a path of cooperation and partnership with Europe and the West, but rather chose confrontation to its own peril.

One thing we can say of 🍊, he may be educating all of us on the importance of politics, if only as a demonstration of how destructive it is when it goes wrong.

In several elections now, we see anti 🍊 sentiment driving voters away from conservative options. If this keeps up, the US will end up isolated not only 🍊‘s trade policies, but also aversive electoral reactions throughout the democratic world.

Looking at cardinals entering conclave, I’m struck by how little it reflects membership. The pope can only be male, all cardinals are male, overwhelmingly white, rather old and mostly from Europe. Followers are half women, growingly from Africa and Asia. Will that ever change?
