The only way you can have a logical story and plot is if you put it under a bell jar from the rest of the world, so it plays by its own internal rules, divorced from the invisible threads while rule our lives. That can work, but I couldn't ever write like that. It's just not how I see the world.

The topic that most drives me insane is the "butterfly effect" of modern society. By flicking a light switch, your emissions could cause some devastating hurricane. By buying something, you could contribute to a genocide. By touching a doorknob, you could spread a deadly disease and kill hundreds.

I don't read a lot of the most popular novels, not for snobbery reasons, I'm just a slow reader (I'd read every book if I could) but one thing that usually turns me off is when a book has so many implied assumptions about the world (usually middle class ones) that I do not think are real at all.
