Had a brilliant day today meeting people across the South West. Repeatedly people telling me - joined by the BBC & the Guardian - they're fed up with old two party politics & ready for change. @greenparty.org.uk are winning more & more elections. We are the positive alternative.

🟢 This is your chance to elect the first Green mayor! Let’s make this happen. Vote Mary Page on 1st May. Real hope. Real change. 🟢 @greenparty.org.uk

I know small businesses in Bristol have been hit hard by Brexit – and this government needs to do much more to repair our trading relationship with the EU so that our local businesses can thrive.

A petition calling for transgender people to more easily change their legal gender has just hit 100,000 signatures. Constituencies with most signatures tend to have a higher Green Party vote share petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

"Patrick McAllister, representing Hotwells and Harbourside, is supporting the scheme. In a written statement included in the report, he said the new rooftop terrace would be an “attraction and an asset” to the area, with extra customers helping the economy." www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol...

Fantastic news!

Labour ministers are apparently ruling out scrapping the two-child benefit cap - in other words, choosing to keep 600,000 children in poverty. Meanwhile govt refuses to consider a wealth tax which could £24bn. Hard to find the words for this level of unnecessary cruelty.

“Trans people are less than 1% of the population. Trans people are not the reason you can't afford eggs, or pay your rent. I think you might be focused on the wrong 1%.” - Bristol Central MP @carladenyer.bsky.social quotes Laverne Cox at trans rights demo in Bristol today.

I'm proud to see the Greens standing with the Trans community. I'm proud to see the Greens standing with Palestine. I'm proud to see the Greens standing with striking workers. I'm proud to see the Greens standing with those facing welfare cuts. Proud to be Green 💚

Me and my green Party colleagues have been dismayed at the Supreme Court ruling this week. It was heartening however, to see how many people turned up to protest on College Green today. We also got a bonus @zoegarbett.bsky.social 💚 🏳️‍⚧️✊. We will continue to fight for the rights of trans people 💚🏳️‍⚧️✊

At Greens4HS2 we are proudly pro trans, trains, trams and tracks. Sending love and solidarity to all our trans siblings in these horrific times. 💚🏳️‍⚧️✊

A fantastic atmosphere today on College Green as @bristolgreenparty.bsky.social came out in solidarity with the trans community. Thank you @carladenyer.bsky.social for your passionate speech in defence of LGBT+ rights - this is how party leaders should act!

We are incredibly saddened to hear of the Supreme Court’s ruling today. We support our friends in the LGBTIQA+ community in their calls for an appeal and fully standby their right for self-identification.

I support the plans for a new rooftop bar overlooking Bristol Harbour, and I hope that councillors on the Development Control committee will approve it. I feel the heritage harms are overstated, and more than outweighed by the economic and social benefits. www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol...

Fantastic turnout to support Stonehouse going green today! Thanks @patdbmcallister.bsky.social @greenpartymolly.bsky.social and all - #stroud

Today is the last day to register to vote in the 1st May elections. This includes the mayoral elections in WECA and elsewhere and also the local council elections. Don't miss your chance to have a say in your area! www.gov.uk/register-to-...

Amongst the global economic chaos, there’s one thing our govt should do above all else: take control of the economy and make it work for people here. That means rethinking Reeves's arbitrary fiscal rules, protecting living standards, and investing, not cutting. metro.co.uk/2025/04/09/t...

🗨 Carla Denyer: "We are here to say that voters have another choice - a positive choice - instead of one of the tired old parties, or worse a party that is divisive, dishonest, in disarray,"  ✅ If there are elections in your area - #VoteGreen. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Brilliant news that Festival Way is open again and improved!

I've been a @teamlabouruk.bsky.social member for roughly 40 years, but enough is enough! How can they favour giving tax benefits to multi-millionaires & big business whilst failing to take control of utility companies & cutting benefits etc?? I've decided to join @bristolgreenparty.bsky.social !!

Happy #AwfulApril everyone 🙃 Energy bills ⬆️ to nearly £2k Water bills ⬆️ 31% in some areas Basic food prices 📈 All affect the poorest worst. All ON TOP of Govt cuts to support for pensioners, children, disabled people. These are political choices. Labour could have chosen a #WealthTax

MAKE CANONS MARSH AGAIN In a feat of engineering to rival Brunel, I am proposing to dig a canal to sever Canon's Marsh from mainland Bristol, making it a marsh once again. Read on for details 🧵

UK, 2025: a country where police break into a place of worship and arrest those inside who are having a meeting and might be planning a non-violent action. The right to peaceful protest is an essential part of a healthy democracy. Governments who crack down on it are governments to be very wary of.

Calls for a #WealthTax are growing - and government's excuses are looking more and more feeble. This week's rally showed the energy of this movement and the breadth of support (78% of the public!) for this common sense policy. Now we keep the pressure up!

Councillor Patrick McAllister reacts to Darren Jones MP’s description of PIP payments as “pocket money” and Labour balancing the books on the backs of the disabled.

Fifteen years of austerity have devastated this country - but now Rachel Reeves is planning more cuts, plunging 50,000 children into poverty in the process. An indefensible choice. My piece for @metro.co.uk on the #SpringStatement. Link below!

greenparty.org.uk/2025/03/26/s...

Disabled people across the country were already terrified of the impact Reeves's cuts will have on them - and now she's set to announce more? This is unconscionable. This government must change course immediately, and tax wealth to repair our broken economy.

Balancing the books on the backs of disabled people is not just unfair; it’s cruel. A million disabled people stand to lose vital support, while the wealthiest are protected. This isn’t necessity, it’s a choice—and it’s the wrong one. #SpringStatement

Today I took a message to Rachel Reeves at the Treasury: it's time to rebalance the economy. A #WealthTax on multi-millionaires and billionaires would raise £24billion - nearly 5 times as much as the government is trying to save by taking support away from disabled people.

Really positive steps in the right direction for Children’s Services in Bristol under Green committee chair Christine Townsend’s leadership. She is so passionate about her work I’m not the least bit surprised about this. www.bristol247.com/news-and-fea...

"No return to austerity" latest

Choosing to cut support for disabled people, knowing that many already live in poverty, and that being disabled means that life almost always COSTS MORE - that's a political choice Pleased to join @crips-against-cuts.bsky.social in Bristol today, angry that it had to happen (📸 by Clare Reddington)

Our current punitive welfare system has led to the deaths of hundreds of Disabled people at the hands of benefits cuts. The Government not only refuses to fix this - but is placing us at risk of further punishment and surveillance. Let us be clear: this is a political choice.

Absolutely right. Government is planning to strip vital support from a million disabled people – but they won’t even consider introducing a fair tax on the extremely wealthy, even though this would raise nearly 5 times more. They urgently needs to rebalance their priorities ⚖️

🚦100 CROSSINGS AROUND BRISTOL TO BE MADE FASTER AND SAFER FOR PEDESTRIANS 🚦 Bristol’s Green-led Transport and Connectivity Committee have ok’d the implementation of Pre-timed max’ing of Standalone crossings across the city, making them faster and more pedestrian friendly.

“Councillor James Crawford said there was "a lot of untapped demand" for more hangars. “The hangars are especially popular with people living in small flats or shared houses meaning they have somewhere safe to leave a bike outdoors.”

Really great to see significant improvements to #Bristol's Children's Services. As Green Councillor Christine Townsend says, “This positive progress must continue, and it is important that we take the advice of inspectors on board where further improvement has been identified.”

Every year 100s of people die preventable deaths because it's no-one's job to make sure recommendations from inquests & inquiries happen. I put forward a bill to change this - v glad to hear govt is considering taking this matter forward @inquest-org.bsky.social www.politicshome.com/news/article...

How many councillors get to take a boat to canvassing? Thank you to everyone who came out today on this beautiful evening for our regular Hotwells & Harbourside doorknocking session 💚

We are 42 days away from the local elections. Tory austerity or Labour austerity. We will challenge it. @greenparty.org.uk want to invest in our local communities. This weekend I'll be all over Kent speaking to people - join us and help get more Greens elected! 👇🏼

'One MP said: “Increasingly I’m trying to figure out what we’re doing that the Tories wouldn’t be if they were in power.”' We're all trying to figure that out... This article says departments are modelling cuts of up to 20%! That would be fatal for many public services, including local government.
