Guilty of this myself with electricity providers, partly a perverse (and unhelpful to me) resentment of the artificial competition in retail but mainly an aversion to having to continually check for better deals, reinforced by mu one experience where the deal price went up straight away

This allows the company/party to perform worse with at best a lagging drop in support. Fortunately Windows isn't anywhere near as bad as for instance the US repubs

You are assuming there's cognition. But seriously it's straight out doublethink, brains trained to accept (and not question) contradictory ideas. I think some of our media train this and there's also call to authority in the mix, stifling any independent thought for what your betters have told you
