By accepting Trump’s anti-Black premise and regurgitating the narrative that equates anything Black as DEI, the NY Times has become part of the propaganda machine

Firing all of the JAGs (Judge Advocates General)—the top lawyers in each service branch—is just as bad as, if not worse than, firing (most of) the Joint Chiefs.

NEH introduces new prohibited categories to comply with executive orders. This is an infringement of academic freedom plain and simple, and also nonsense: what is “discriminatory equity ideology”

But Joe Rogan promised me the richest man in the world only cared about fighting corruption!

Accidental Partridge here:

TFW gets so anti-woke that it lands on the phrase "pregnant people" from the other side

Ugly manoeuvring at the International Studies Association Governing Council, not shared on Bluesky yet so far as I can see so reposting FYIs.

Preliminary approval: Five years in prison for anyone who publishes information that will be used by the ICC. Legal expert: If the bill is approved, any journalist who publishes an investigation about a crime committed by soldiers will be exposed to imprisonment.

Essential, if in that way that yields reams of new questions. For all their bloviating about state death, right accelerationists seem rather dependent on its coercive power. The contradictory fantasies that flourish precisely when entombed in a stumbling hegemon. www.nybooks.com/online/2025/...

Tempted to cheer the humanities even as they are driven to the grave. Critical reading skills would have helped Gavin here, etc. But I suspect this is someone who began as an antisemite edgelord laundering his source material. “The fraudulent case for the Iraq war”? You could get that from the LRB.

Privileged to be saying something about Rahul Rao’s new book at Housmans on 19 March. Come get caught in a web that connects Oxford and Cape Town, Gujarat and Ghana, Bristol and the Isle of Mull.

Ah, this must be the retreat from empire I keep hearing about.

I’m starting to think JD Vance might have been trying to annoy us.

The first article in what will be a special issue on positive masculinity, out now. What can we know about arts-informed approaches to reducing men's violence? Will McInerney has some ideas. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Almost comically racist. Safe routes exist only for some nationalities. Unsafe routes mean you get rejected for citizenship (even if your grounds for refugee status were well-founded). Worse, being the wrong nationality for a safe route becomes a question of your ‘good character’.

Combining the worst of both worlds remains HMG policy: ❌ Highest fees in the OECD but no internal redistribution (cheaper to go to Harvard if you're poor). ❌ Vicious competition for students but no variation on price. ❌ Death by government diktat but lowest OECD state funding and no bailouts.

An absurd interpretation. The Convention requires facilitation of citizenship for refugees, with no exception for unlawful entrants.

The racial exclusions of the border regime have malfunctioned. Somehow the British state extended a minimal act of kindness to a family of the wrong sort of humans. Bipartisan resolve that this will never happen again. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

POLITY, the standard academic measure of regime type for many, many decades (and a key basis for such political science hits as ‘The Democratic Peace Thesis’), has further downgraded the United States to “not a democracy” and “on the cusp of autocracy”. h/t @cullenhendrix.bsky.social

I was in a meeting yesterday where someone said the obliteration of USAID wasn’t such a big deal because 75% of the money went back to the US anyway.* Going to put my neck out and say I think that opinion is irresponsible and complacent.

Never misses

BBC just released damning research on AI assistants' news accuracy. Results: 51% of AI responses had significant issues. 19% introduced errors when citing BBC. 13% misquoted or made up BBC content entirely. 🤐🤐 www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/... via @ezraeeman.bsky.social

Are we still maintaining that it’s hysterical to call Apartheid Clyde and friend racists?

honestly: a minor solution to the PhD funding crisis would be to remove all funding awards for Oxbridge — and make them fund their own PhDs from their enormous investment portfolios — and disperse that money among post-92s.

“The conservative says, ‘You too can be superior.’ The reactionary liberal says, ‘I alone am average.’” A very beautiful bonfire. nymag.com/intelligence...

Blindingly obvious that hoovering up students (and driving other unis to the wall) would “pose challenges”. Weapons grade brass neck for managers to first use ‘student experience’ as a bludgeon against staff (some of whom will have warned of pedagogical shortfalls) and then shutter programmes.

Rubio claims that @USAID lifesaving assistance for health and humanitarian needs will continue. But his team just communicated that the entire agency will be imminently reduced from 14,000 to 294 people. Just 12 in Africa.

Bantersaurus Vex.

The masters of the universe are snivelling sycophants.

Cancel culture, but for the very memory of a thing.

Gonna defend the position that knowledge is never contextual, situated, or in any way embodied in practice. Just wanna feel something.

Much much worse than initial reports suggested.

Imagine abolishing a relatively independent development agency so that you could use its funds for the ‘national interest’ or more plausibly whatever ineffectual short-termism lent you partisan advantage. Or keeping such an arrangement from the last guys. They sure do things differently over there!

I wondered how long it would take.

Musk's cronies tried to to gain access to classified USAID data. USAID Director of Security John Voorhees security said no. The Musk people threatened to call in the US Marshals and take the data at gunpoint. They still said no. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/02/p...

This is the coup. 1/6 was an old man’s idea of how to coup. This is the tech bro boys ‘sophisticated’ version. No costumes. No defecation. Why invade and sully the castle when you can digitally take control of its (purse) strings?

Soviet Union provides free room and board in exotic archipelago for ungrateful dissident.

First they came for the woke, and I said, that's right, get those sicko bastards!

Famously, the response to the teachings of Jesus was “ah, yes, basic common sense”.

This is why we don’t pay architecture critics to review films. www.theguardian.com/film/2025/ja...

I wish that people who don't understand accounting, banking and finance would stop taking tips from academics on why all the talk of massive deficits in our sector is a lie because "there was a surplus!" We can be pissed off about a decade+ of mismanagement without delusions of being fine now.

A lot of sense here, which almost guarantees these ideas are dead in the water. What’s the bill on subsidising the high-cost subjects if fees are politically impossible? Many of the other recommends would be stabilising without great cost to the public purse.
